Iowans on the food assistance program known as SNAP would have far fewer food purchasing options — not being able to use the benefits to buy meat, nuts or canned fruits and vegetables — under legislation proposed by Republican lawmakers.
However, the bill may be amended eventually to include more foods, Iowa House Speaker Pat Grassley said.
For the time being, the legislation as written — which has 39 House Republican sponsors, including Grassley — would limit SNAP program users to only foods eligible for users of WIC, the nutrition assistance program for expectant mothers.
That means SNAP users would be limited to purchasing WIC-approved foods like milk, juice, cereal, bread, rice, pasta, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs and yogurt.
But SNAP users would no longer be able to purchase with the aid many other foods, including meat, poultry, fish, canned fruits and vegetables and items commonly used in food preparation like butter, flour, spices and seasonings, sugar, and vegetable oil, and ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and other condiments.
In addition to food banks and anti-hunger advocacy groups, among those registered as against the bill, according to state lobbying records, is Tyson Foods, the world’s second-largest processor of chicken, beef and pork with meatpacking plants in Iowa.
Grassley said the legislation was designed to ensure accountability in Iowa’s assistance programs, like SNAP, to make sure they are sustainable. The food assistance program is funded by the federal government and jointly administered by the federal and state governments.

They’ll substitute bugs.
Oh, SNAP! Good for Iowa.
I’m actually good with this,. You want bacon? GET A JOB.
This will leave more money to send to Ukraine. Good, let American mothers and kids eat less - they’re too fat anyway. /s
No protein...unlimited Twinkies!
Poor people should be given boxes of Cheese, boxes of Powdered milk, boxes of Beans, and boxes of Rice.
And the boxes should be sized according to how many children you have — more kids? Smaller boxes.
Being unproductive should be an undesirable state, and people should work very hard to be productive. Finish High School, get a job, get married before having kids. It’s not hard to avoid poverty. If you are in poverty, your life should suck.
This is a good example of why taking anything from the government comes with huge risks.
Seem the right think to do!
The food stamps people are really snacking on very expensive stuff sometimes. Feeding steaks to dogs, eating lobsters and expensive meats.
I hope this gets enacted!
You will buy BUGS and be HAPPY!.......................
If it forces people off of food stamps it is good. However, the people that really need the assistance will have much worse health without the protein. SNAP will survive but MedicId will tank.
There should be no SNAP program.
If people need help, it should be given “in kind”, not as “cash”.
If someone needs food, you give them the actual staples. Rice, beans, hamburger, chicken, vegetables. You do NOT give them money.
I don’t know much about SNAP but at the very least they should ban any kind of junk food and soda.
They need to not allow junk food and stuff, which includes a lot of breakfast cereals, rather than cutting out food that is actually good for you.
Bugs are not on the list, but you can eat all the tuna you want.
Isn’t this another variation of the Michelle Obama “healthy school lunch program”?
That was a raging success.
Its a corrupt, bloated system.
I know of an entire department in graduate/Phd at an Ivy League university where the students receive food stamps. Am sure students in other departments are aware of it too.
When they realized all it took was a simple application, within weeks, every student had applied (and was accepted).
I love this.
Useless eaters get brusssel sprouts and vegan crackers until they get off their asses.
I remember the ‘Commodity Program’ from the early 60’s.
Flour, meal, peanut butter, butter, powder milk, various other things..............
