The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Liver may be filtering, but it does not store toxins.
Liver is a “super food” - I always feel better when I’m eating it fairly regularly.

Haven’t had a Japanese beetle in the yard since the year after I got my chickens!
Mine ignore the adult beetles, but go nuts over the grubs. I used to know someone whose chickens loved eating the adults. He even rigged one of those bag traps so it would funnel beetles into their run. His chickens would sit there staring, waiting for a beetle to fall out so they could grab it!
Mine eat “Hearty Hen” from Farm & Fleet. No problems so far.
If there are problems in the feed, my first instinct would be to see which ingredients came from China.
I had a customer at Jung’s and her chickens LOVED them, so she would bring her bucket of water and pluck them off of nursery stock for us in high summer.
Whatever floats your boat, I guess, LOL!
This is one area where you will NOT convert me. :)
Well, there ARE others, but that’s for another day, LOL!

(From Woke Societies on Telegram) The poster (a video)said they did not get any eggs all winter. People on her chicken raising forums said the same thing. One of their escapee chickens kept getting out and became free range and started laying again.

This woman says that something in the feed is causing the chickens not to lay eggs. She changed the feeds and her chickens started laying eggs again.

"The farmers almost unanimously conclude their commercial chicken feed is to blame for their hens’ decreased output, as the issue appears to have been remedied after switching to a different feed.
Check out videos from farmers below all documenting the same phenomenon, with some naming the brands they suspect to be responsible:"
Let’s hope this isn’t true. But anything is possible these days. pic.twitter.com/T1pxiW5rw8 — KeriA (@KeriA1776again) January 22, 2023
I have called multiple farms that sell chickens and they are telling me that their chickens have stopped laying eggs and therefore they do not have any for sale. I looked into it a little further and apparently they are putting something in the feed to stop them from being able to lay eggs!”
I do not have poultry. Anyone having problems?
You got this story out there first! (I Should have backread the thread and replied to your post!) See post above for additional complaints about Chicken feed!
.
I haven’t had problems with chicken feed, and no one in any of the forums I’m on has mentioned having this problem. A lot of people are saying it’s a hoax, but as far as I know there are still tests being run.
If there is a problem, my first instinct would be to blame ingredients from China. I say that even knowing, logically, that mycotoxins from mold are far more likely. Gut reactions don’t follow logic.
I’m thinking about starting to mix some hybrids in. Did nothing but open pollinated last year, all from Baker Creek. They’re 100 miles from me and don’t charge me for shipping, no matter the amount, even a single $3.00 packet.
They probably figure I have gone or will go to their festivals and it is something I want to do someday. I’m sure most people that go end up spending more than they planned.
Thanks Ellendra!
I did provide a number of different reports from different sources. The one indicated the feed had been sent for testing so yes, wait and see the results.
Ellendra; I think that pigweed is a trap crop for cucumber beetles. They apparently prefer Blue hubbard squash too. Supposed to plant it on the outside of your squash plantings. (IIRC!)
Add egg shells to the soil. You could also side dress with a bit of Calcium Nitrate that should help. Good luck!
Thank you!

Good to have a mix. I have no real room to rotate in my small garden, so my hybrids are grown to fight the diseases and fungus they will encounter there and my heirlooms will probably put four or five few braces of tomatoes and wilt away.
