NATIONAL KETO DAY
National Keto Day hits January 5th with an approach to transforming our health. Recent research suggests the high-fat, low-carb ketogenic or ‘keto’ diet offers a number of benefits.

Benefits
Two of the most significant perks seen with the keto diet are weight loss and healthy blood sugar support. In fact, studies have shown improved glycemic control for those with type 2 diabetes while adhering to a ketogenic diet.
Other health benefits of a keto diet may include healthy cholesterol and blood pressure support. It may also be beneficial for those with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
Keto Plan
How does the diet work? By eliminating carbohydrates, your body will use up its store of glycogen first. Then it will move into ketosis and begin burning fat.
Primarily, a keto diet consists of healthy fats, like eggs, avocado, olive oil, and sustainably-raised meat. Nuts, seeds, dairy, and low-carbohydrate vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, and green peppers are also easy to incorporate. Coconut oil, grass-fed butter, and ghee add fat and flavor to a keto diet. Occasionally, small servings of berries are added to the menu.
Eliminate these foods if you are considering a keto diet:
sweets, sugar, sodas, baked goods
grains, whole grains, and starches
fruits, starchy vegetables
hydrogenated oils, vegetable oil
diet foods, including low sugar, sugar-free, low-fat foods
HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL KETO DAY

If you’re considering the keto approach to a healthier lifestyle, or are already engaged in it, whip up your best keto meal or snack, and post a pic of it to Instagram using the hashtag #NationalKetoDay. For every post, The Vitamin Shoppe will donate $5 to Blessings in a Backpack, a non-profit organization that provides food on weekends to elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry.
You can also stop into your local The Vitamin Shoppe the weekend of the 5th to sample various keto products for free. Make sure to follow @vitaminshoppe on Instagram for more details!
NATIONAL KETO DAY HISTORY
The Vitamin Shoppe founded National Keto Day on January 5, 2019, to educate and bring awareness to the ketogenic diet and further highlight the many health benefits a keto lifestyle offers.
In 2019, the Registrar at National Day Calendar® proclaimed National Keto Day to be observed annually on January 5th.
Yes sir, thanks for making sure. Only green and bright colored ones. I told him I like chicken or shrimp fajitas a lot, and he said great just try to not eat the tortillas, or at least get some low carb or spinach based ones.
He wants 50 pounds off in a year. Pretty aggressive but said I should be in great shape by then if I follow through. He’s expecting me to be down by 10-15 when I see him again in 2 months.
They’re not the brightest of animals.
I couldn’t tell if the video was fake or not, but I saw a cow eat a baby chicken…
Use Corn tortillas instead of flour tortillas..............
You can definitely be down that much in two months.
The loss in water weight alone could be 10 lbs.
(Depending on initial size)
Deer have been known to dine on carcasses............
Good Luck! You should drop quickly if you eat that way.
Thank you all for the encouragement. It won’t be easy, but, I like the foods we’re talking about anyway. I’m only going to be drinking water, tea, and coffee as well (with no additives).
Who knows, I may even go completely over the edge and mix in some intermittent fasting too! That could be too much at once, but I am one of those who goes all in on something, once I’m committed.
Thanks again for your support!
Don’t include intermittent fasting without doctor approval. That’s a very low caloric intake already.
Stay strong.
If you love bread that is the hardest part of keto. The “keto” breads are not very good.
The best thing for a bread lover on keto are the mission low carb tortillas. Try them with whatever you like - BLT’s, tuna, pulled pork, deli meats, bratwurst, hamburger, low sugar sloppy joes, etc etc.
Without those tortillas it would be a much more difficult diet for me.
Eating out can be challenging but there are salads (watch the dressings or bring your own low carb dressing) and you can get big burgers on lettuce wraps and just eat them with a fork and a knife - the lettuce never holds together! These are pretty good usually.
It’s not a bad diet and I truly feel better when I stick to it but don’t buy the silly hype that you can eat whatever you want. Eat enough to feel satisfied, don’t eat after dinner time, minimize snacks and munching, and give it a shot!
When you first start you might get a keto headache as your body adjusts.
Good luck and God speed.
The author left out the cancer treatment.
Thomas Seyfried’s “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease” is a must read for those who want alternatives .
Good advice! Thanks again.
Anytime.
Thanks, all good info. Thankfully I’m not big on bread, except for pizza, which I will definitely miss. The hardest thing for me will be potatoes. Love every kind, especially chips, fries, and tater tots. Probably the main reason I need to lose some weight LOL!
“Why do people feel the need to comment on what you are eating?”
Unlike a vegan, I have no interest in PUSHING keto. However, if I see someone struggling with their weight and not succeeding, then of course I’ll offer it as an option. After 45 years of yo-yo diets, it has worked extremely well for me the last 5+ years.
But if someone doesn’t have an issue with how they eat, it is their own business. Including a diabetic friend who insists on eating cakes, cookies and ice cream while taking insulin. I think she is killing herself but she isn’t interested in changing. Glad she isn’t my wife! I don’t look forward to going to her funeral.
Wait.
Equal time clause??
Yesterday being Spaghetti Day.
Keep an eye on blood ureic nitrogen (BUN) and gout. I’m convinced that keto does not cause the liver to turn hyper-uricimic. But if it does when you’re on a keto diet there can be adverse effects.
There was a study done on weight loss using Keto. It concluded about 10% of the weight loss (after the first week) was water.
When I switched to Keto without intake restriction (other than eating between noon and 6 pm), I lost 5-6 pounds/month until I lost 35 pounds. Over the last 5 years, I’ve gained some muscle while keeping the same weight. Still have fat on my abs but I can see the bottom of my rib cage in the mirror - something I had never seen in over 60 years!
Keto plus restricting intake ought to drop weight faster than I did. Which makes sense for some health issues.
