I see people do stupid crap with weights all the time at the gym. Bench pressing huge amounts of weight without someone spotting is one of them,.

Yes, it’s good to have a spotter... and to use safe equipment and use it properly.
But don’t dis using heavier weight. If you stuck with the pink dumbbells, you’d get no where.

Smith machines are designed to allow gym-goers to lift barbells without a spotter.

I would not feel safe at a gym without staff, but I am female.
In this country, not staffing a gym at all open hours would make for enormous liability.
Maybe the machine broke, which is why it collapsed and bystanders could not free the man.

“His injury happened while doing a seated overhead press in a Smith machine,” a gym member wrote online.
I don’t like machines in general, and the Smith in particular. Seems like a case of needing to find a new gym more than anything else.

He must have had the weights trapped on his chest just under the chin, ouch.
Smith machines are not recommended for squats or bench press, too restricted with range of motion (free weights are superior). A seated overhead press would be fine but not with too much weight. Don’t try your max when nobody is there, not prudent. I’m glad he will recover.

Prayers for this man. Sometimes we get carried away with feeling invincible. I guess the Women’s Hospital was the nearest hospital to take him to. Gender takes a back seat when your life is on the line.

This will be a weighty issue for the Snap Fitness legal team.

If you’re benching by yourself with no spotter arms you’re never to use clamps, as you can rock the barbell back and forth and get the weights off.

The machines in gyms get heavy use and break all the time. Really dumb to trust them when injury/death is possible.

Indeed. Whatever happened to having a spotter EVERYTIME you want to do weight training? Seems like a no brainer. So I guess...
