I've recently been contemplating selling my plasma at one of the various plasma centers in my large city. I need advise from FReepers who have either done this or are familiar with the industry.
Good idea?
What are the pros and/or cons?
Any advice on plasma companies to avoid?
What is a good compensation rate?
I'm not doing so out of desperation, just would like some more ammo money in my pockets, and for some other savings goals.
Most people donate, but the money will be minimal at best.
I would never sell my Panasonic Plasma, they have good motion, great color and you cannot easily get them anymore cause led and oleds are cheaper to make
I think my daughter said she could get $200, but that may have been a multi-donation commitment.
Hate to differ with you, but no, I don’t think most people donate. The plasma industry is very successful and Plasma for pay is going to draw a lot more people than donors.
You need good veins and not be on any blood thinners.
I used to donate blood twice a year. Mostly to the Red Cross but sometimes to a hospital or blood drive organized by people related to someone who was sick. Can’t do it anymore - doctor’s orders.
A couple years ago I needed blood. Luckily the hospital had my size and color in stock.
Looks like $40 to $60 range, per this website:

They are kind of heavy and use a lot of electricity.
They come to visit while she’s asleep and painfully siphon her life juices.
I used to consider the ethics question as well. But then I read an article from Thomas Sowell and it made me rethink that line. Sowell posited that the supply of much needed blood products would be larger if there were an incentive to donate. I would love to see a study that determined how the blood supply would react if donation for pay were suddenly banned nationwide. I happen to believe that it would decimate the supply of blood to historic low levels.
The company I worked for in the 1980s had four plasmapheresis centers in southern California. Three of the four were in moderately high crime places so that might be something to consider. Also if you do repeat draws your arm will look like you are shooting drugs.
hemoglobin disorders also can rule you out. Mine is too low. I thought about doing it to get rid of excess iron but it was a no go....plus my veins probably arent good enough anyway.
It’s been a long time, but it seems like you could find good incentive offers for first time donors. Probably still some colorful people in there with you, too. Only downside would be too-frequent needle pokes in the same area.
Everyone in the blood supply chain gets paid big bucks except the stupid voluntary donors.
the MD/CEO of our local “non-profit” blood bank was paid $800,000. While the sheep lined up to give blood for patients who the hospital would bill enough to buy a trip to Paris.
Only a fool would fall for donating blood.
Per the link in post #9, the Federal gov limits the number of ‘donations’ to 2 within a 7 day period. That would be about 8 ‘donations’ per month.
I’d donate but they couldn’t pay me enough for the expensive scotch that comes comes with the blood.
Better than siphoning my wallet.
