How do you stop raiding the office pantry for snacks? And why do some people crave salty snacks, while others prefer sweet treats? We put down our bag of chips to ask the experts.
It’s 3pm and like clockwork, your brain – and colleague – are nudging you to make that trip to the office pantry for coffee and snacks. Or if you’re working from home, you can’t help but be drawn to the fridge like, every five minutes.
Why are you hardwired to snack, especially when you’re trying to lose weight – and if the boss is reading this over your shoulder, you’re also trying to stay focused on your work?
It is likely that you have been “conditioning” yourself to want to snack your whole life. Well, maybe not your entire life but from the age of five onwards, according to Professor Tai E Shyong, the centre director of NUHS Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention & Management. Below five, “the regulation of food intake is very biological”, that is, your eating pattern is dictated by your hormones.

“But ‘snacking’ usually means something like potato chips or cookies :-)”
And the distorting of diet food in today’s clarity means they will probably chase it with a diet soft drink. It’s never quantity, it’s quality.

“Scientists say.”
Scientists are always experimenting.

Shop on a full stomach. Don't buy snacks. When you want something like that at home, they are not available.
“More cutting edge doctors seem to be against this approach.”
One of the major enemies of weight control is losing control. I’ve been determined a diabetic since the late 80’s, and the most success I’ve had with the comfort of feeling better is multiple meals of less during the day. Now of course diabetes is not an exact science as the body reacts different every day with the many outside the body “triggers” like stress, exercise amount, how much sleep you got last night...there’s more. So to say there’s a one size fits all way of accomplishing even a modified lifestyle is being overzealous at best. And of course there are always scientists who will disagree with another theory on everything except death. They all seem basically to agree on that one even though there might be a heart rate with no brain waves or visa versa. Nothing is simple.

“theory is that you aren’t raising your blood sugar multiple times a day...”
That doesn’t always need the insertion of food into the body. A for instance is as morning approaches, your body prepares to rise and it releases a surge of hormones. Those hormones can work against insulin to cause your blood sugar to rise slightly. When this happens, it is known as ‘dawn phenomenon.’
In most people, dawn phenomenon is typically harmless because your body creates a small amount of insulin to correct the problem. However, for those with diabetes, it can become a bigger challenge, says endocrinologist Sana Hasan, DO. I have that problem.
An interesting article on that is here:

There always seem to be more theories than successes and each theory has a certain amount of success and points.

Wfe and my 50th. Taking another cruise.
—
We had a cruise planned for our 50th but “covid” cancelled those plans. We are planning one for Christmas 2023 assuming most of the crazy restrictions will be gone by then.
Congratulation of your 50th, few make it anymore.
And congrats back for your 50th. My wife and I have a good system so we can settle anything thrown at us. When we first got married, the laws were set up that the man of the house was the overall responsible person for anything that happened in the household. He took both the blame and the success kudos for anything.
That, of course, has changed over the years so we have worked out a compromise. She figures out what to do, tells me, sometimes, what it is, and I do what I’m told. It’s simple for me as I have learned to alleviate the pressure from myself. In other words, I’m a kept man. I make the money, she spends it and I stay out of trouble and eat better. I keep wondering what I was thinking about 50 years ago.

Yup. Genetics most likely plays a role, too.
Agree with you absolutely.
