Chernobyl black frogs reveal evolution [?] in action

The impact of the acute exposure to high doses of radiation was severe for the environment and the human population. But more than three decades after the accident, Chernobyl has become one of the largest nature reserves in Europe. A diverse range of endangered species finds refuge there today, including bears, wolves, and lynxes.

As with other pollutants, radiation could be a very strong selective factor, favouring organisms with mechanisms that increase their survival in areas contaminated with radioactive substances.

After detecting the first black frogs in 2016, we decided to study the role of melanin colouration in Chernobyl wildlife. Between 2017 and 2019 we examined in detail the colouration of Eastern tree frogs in different areas of northern Ukraine.

During those three years we analysed the dorsal skin colouration of more than 200 male frogs captured in 12 different breeding ponds. These localities were distributed along a wide gradient of radioactive contamination. They included some of the most radioactive areas on the planet, but also four sites outside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and with background radiation levels used as controls.

Chernobyl tree frogs have a much darker colouration than frogs captured in control areas outside the zone. As we found out in 2016, some are pitch-black. This colouration is not related to the levels of radiation that frogs experience today and that we can measure in all individuals. The dark colouration is typical of frogs from within or near the most contaminated areas at the time of the accident.

The study of the Chernobyl black frogs constitutes a first step to better understanding the protective role of melanin in environments affected by radioactive contamination. In addition, it opens the doors to promising applications in fields as diverse as nuclear waste management and space exploration.

I have, yet another, dumb question. Hopefully FR experts can answer.

Is this actually evolution or is it actually adaptation? Or is there a difference?

Definitely not so-called evolution. This is a repeat of the pepper moth fiasco.

I would think adaptation is the same as micro evolution but I’m no Biologist.

Certainly adaptation is seen all the time. That’s not all that interesting, to me.

The key question of Evolution is: “Do we all come from a common ancestor?” Perhaps there was once a simple single-cell organism. All the fish, all the birds, all the frogs, all the primates, all the cats and dogs come from that simple single-cell organism. Or do they?

Having frogs get darker does not, in my opinion, contribute to that central question.

I want to see frogs turn into toads, or mice turn into bats. Show me a species that turns into another species. Or at least define “species” in a stable way rather than a “it depends” kind of way.

I put Evolution in the same category as Climate Change. Seems like a religion to me.

So if radioactivity can cause skin color to turn dark was there some event in Africa?...

Meet Oklo, the Earth’s Two-billion-year-old only Known Natural Nuclear Reactor

I apologize for that there.

Radiation doesn’t add anything, it takes away. If the genetic structure is modified it’s because it takes away part of it.

Adaption, natural selection.

That’s assuming the observations are correct and the hypothetical premise is correct.

Theoretically if radiation were killing frogs, but darker skin due to melanin mitigated the radiation harm, more frogs with darker skin would survive in the population.

How many times have you asked that same dumb question?

From the article (bold-faced mine):
" The dark colouration is typical of frogs from within or near the most contaminated areas at the time of the accident. The study of the Chernobyl black frogs constitutes a first step to better understanding the protective role of melanin in environments affected by radioactive contamination. In addition, it opens the doors to promising applications in fields as diverse as nuclear waste management and space exploration."

There you have it. The Darwinists are laying the groundwork for saying that only blacks should work near dangerous nuclear reactors and wastes.

So if we have a nuclear war, dark skinned people are more likely to survive?

You don’t have to be a biologist. Unless you want to know what a woman is (couldn’t resist). This is not an evolution into another species. It is still a frog, therefore, the same species. It is just adaptation. There are some humorous videos out there of evolutionist biologists, who when questioned about one species evolving into another, overwhelmingly give examples of speciation (canines-dogs...) or adaptation. Even Darwin couldn’t-that’s why it’s Darwin’s THEORY of Evolution.

So if we have a nuclear war, dark skinned people are more likely to survive?

I expect you would also be more in danger from radiation if you keep your reproductive organs on the outside.
