Firefighters’ Clothing Contamination in Fires of Electric Vehicle Batteries and Photovoltaic Modules—Literature Review and Pilot Tests Results

Abstract

The electric vehicle (EV) market, together with photovoltaic (PV) installations continues to develop at a pace. However, there are concerns that EV and PV installation fires may create more harmful substances than other types of fire. PV modules and car battery fires emit a range of carcinogenic and highly toxic compounds that are not yet fully understood and may pose a threat to firefighters’ health. This also raises the question of the impact on firefighters’ clothing and the safe handling and cleaning after such fires. This article presents a literature and standards review of the firefighters’ protective clothing maintenance and cleaning.

A little off topic but I wonder how many of those things are dead on the side of the road after trying to evacuate the hurricane

The left worships at the altar of zero emissions. Nothing else matters to them but how much CO2 is released.

They deliberately and intentionally chose to have windmills slice birds into shreds rather than admit that the things are a disaster.
They are going to deliberately and intentionally allow EVs to burst into flames, killing the elderly in wheelchairs and kids strapped into child seats. They will willingly let it happen just so they can appease the great god of EVs.

It has nothing to do with zero emissions. It has EVERYTHING to do with power.

Imagine 1 million people fleeing a florida hurricane in EV’s on a hot day....I mean 1 million people exiting their EVs walking along the road trying to get away from a hurricane traveling 45mph...

Hope mefia cameras are there for the “You’re not in Florida anymore, Toto” videos.

They need to have a front tow bar connection so they can get pulled North by diesel pickups. Like RV dinghy towing.

Doubt sitting on a 1000 lb battery is very safe.

Need to mandate a front bumper tow bar connection. Like dinghy tow behind RVs.

Let diesel pickups pull them north.

Would it make sense for companies that sold laundry detergent, to run massive advertisement campaigns encouraging people not to get their clothes dirty and to wear dirty clothes? This will allow people to demonstrate how virtuous they are by limiting their use of laundry soap.

Why are electric utilities encouraging people not to buy their services?

https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/highway-1-closed-at-moss-landing-due-to-fire/

MOSS LANDING, Calif. (KRON) – Highway 1 is closed at Moss Landing in Monterey County due to a fire at a Pacific Gas & Electric, Co. substation, according to a tweet from Caltrans.

The road way will take 4-6 hours to open again, a subsequent tweet stated at 6:50 a.m.

California Highway Patrol Santa Cruz tweeted that the fire was at a powerplant, and that the closure is from Salinas Road to Potrero Road, but Caltrans District 5 subsequently stated that “the fire … is NOT at the #MossLanding Power Plant,” but is at the adjacent PG&E substation and battery facility.

The crux of the bixkit:

"...In conclusion, it could be stated that car battery and PV module fires may pose a threat to firefighters health not only during fire events, but also later, when they are under repeated exposure to toxins accumulated on their clothing. Therefore, it is essential to conduct further research on the effectiveness of the available cleaning methods, which the authors of this manuscript plan in the near future. This would enable to develop new guidelines for contaminated firefighters clothing handling and cleaning...."

Until now, I never considered the possibility of long-term damage created as a result of an EV battery fire. Either damage to the environment...or physical damage to firefighters that fight these fires. Wait’ll the firefighter lawsuits crank up.
