BENTONVILLE, Ark. (WSFA) - The ability to shop during overnight hours was a staple at many Walmart stores prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, while the pandemic has eased, America’s largest retailer’s decision against returning to 24-hour operations has not.
Walmart, along with a number of other chains, shifted their operating hours in early 2020 to perform enhanced cleaning and to allow associates time to restock shelves as the pandemic ramped up.
As some COVID-19 restrictions eased in mid-2021, Walmart adjusted its hours for U.S. stores to 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. local time.
Don’t expect to be able to fill your cart or run in for an emergency item at 2 a.m. any time soon, though.
“There are no plans at this time to return our Walmart stores to 24-hour per day operations,” said Charles Crowson, director of Walmart Press Office Corporate Communications. He did not further explain the decision.

I see that once in a while too, in the evenings. I think you’re right, that someone thought it would be more efficient if the day crew positions the pallets so that the evening crew can stock shelves without having to move the pallets out of the back. Might be a good idea at that, IF the evening stockers get right to it. Otherwise, a mess such as you describe.
A booming economy with everything open 24/7 ?
That sounds like Paradise to me.
always amazed me the folks who did big shopping at 4:00 am.
figured they hated crowds.
Not really - I feel everyone should have as nice a life as possible. Most of the late night crews at these stores are low wage young parents. It’s just not worth it to me to see their lives be so stressed for marginal profits for ‘elites’ and for people who can’t figured out to get the whipping cream the day before Christmas...
I was going to say the same thing...here in my area, the vast majority of shoplifting occurred over night as there were just a couple of folks up front, no real control throughout the store and thus it made easy pickings for thieves. And for staff to steal. In fact, an high-up at my local store told me that even though the pandemic was somewhat involved in the decision to stop the 24 hour operation, it was really more about theft. With shoplifting felony limits now at $1,000 in Oklahoma, stores are getting slammed. And now that most all stores have an absolute prohibition on employees going after shoplifters, it is even worse. The odds of getting caught are low...especially since store employees are powerless to do anything but call police, and if you stay below $1,000, you just get pinched for a misdemeanor...then crime somewhat does pay. Just sad.
I thought they just let people walk out with stuff now.
That’s kind of the reason given by people as to why they went to Walmart then. Stuff going wrong that needs fixing...
I worked 3rd shift when I was young, too. Many night owls prefer that shift.

My next door neighbor retired a few years ago after working the midnight shift for 40 years and he’s unable to sleep at night. Shouldn’t be a problem as he’s a widower and lives alone and can sleep whenever he wants to. He put a very noticeable sign on his door that says, “day sleeper” and people still knock on his door in the day time.

When we lived in Ctrl FL, almost all walmarts were 24/7 super walmarts. Moved to rural MO and none near us were 24/7 or super walmarts. One of the two walmarts near us is more like a large dollar store in size.
Thefts are out of control.
Shortages of staff continue so at night rather than staff the place with cashiers, only stockers work to get the daily deliveries out on to the sales floor and on shelves.
Also, no late night hours means no parking lot crimes, vehicle break ins, purse snatching, fights, etc.

This thread is interesting—obviously a lot of folks have never worked late night or early morning shifts and wanted to run some quick errands before or after.
The real world is 24/7.
More than the crime issue, I believe this man-demic was a golden opportunity for them to "Reset" (Great Reset?) to an operating plan that is more profitable to them.

I was generally done with, not only what I had to do, but everything I COULD do by1:15AM Then I had a desk, computer, (8086, 8-bit with an amber monitor) a photocopy machine, and a coffee maker. My grades in college actually went up
Yes. The governments of the world basically destroyed the economy that existed in 2019. Those were “The Good Ol’ Days”. These days? Read Kuntsler’s “The Long Emergency”.
If you work at a hospital, LE, in manufacturing...
I can see a need, but these days humans and utlities cost too much, and crime is a huge issue.
Many years (decades!) ago I worked for one of those inventory firms that go into retail stores and count the inventory.
The inventory did not start until the store closed, which often meant that the shift began at 9 or 10 at night.
That meant we went home at 2 or 3 or 4 in the morning—and really appreciated any fast food places and/or Walmarts in the area that were open.
