Walmart: No plans to make stores 24/7 again

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (WSFA) - The ability to shop during overnight hours was a staple at many Walmart stores prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, while the pandemic has eased, America’s largest retailer’s decision against returning to 24-hour operations has not.

Walmart, along with a number of other chains, shifted their operating hours in early 2020 to perform enhanced cleaning and to allow associates time to restock shelves as the pandemic ramped up.

As some COVID-19 restrictions eased in mid-2021, Walmart adjusted its hours for U.S. stores to 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. local time.

Don’t expect to be able to fill your cart or run in for an emergency item at 2 a.m. any time soon, though.

“There are no plans at this time to return our Walmart stores to 24-hour per day operations,” said Charles Crowson, director of Walmart Press Office Corporate Communications. He did not further explain the decision.

Since the stores are cleaned at night and the shelves are mostly restocked at night, it wasn’t very hard to just keep a cashier or two around so customers could shop - the lights were on anyway.

Even though they have self check-out, it's still a pain in the @$$ because you need someone to keep an eye on the register to make sure no one is stealing. Maybe in favorable jurisdictions, they can bring the hours back because they can man it with robots and if you steal, they can send the pictures to the local police department.

“Guess you’ve never had to repair a broken pipe at 2am.”

Or get the supplies necessary to de-skunk a dog around that time, either.

Shelves restocked at night? I wish. You can’t push a cart down an aisle at Walmart or any grocery store these days without having to maneuver past somebody stocking shelves. I miss the days when the shelf-stocking happened at night.

On the other hand, if Walmart is closing nights, it may revive the sport of turkey bowling.

Pre-covid, 24/7 Walmart and all day breakfast at McDonalds were not just a reality, but becoming expected. The economy was so hot minimum wages were rising and work conditions improving organically as corporations competed for labor, and unemployment as well as labor participation were all at record lows.

There was no magic formula that government stumbled upon to make this happen, it mostly just stood up for American production on the world stage and got out of the way of business.

Never forget what they took from us.

“I went down to the 24-hour grocery. When I got there, the guy was locking the front door.
I said, ‘Hey, the sign says you’re open 24 hours.
He said, ‘Yes, but not in a row.”

What is it about Walmart that brings out weirdos and other colorful people?

Now I'm a people person but the store truly brings out the dregs of society.

Guess it makes sense since there aren’t as many people working the hours in which required odd shopping hours. They are all getting paid to not work and stay home.

We have 1 Walmart in our town of over 50,000, and I thought it was just our store that closed at 11 pm. I used to work the swing shift and it was great to be able to stop by for groceries at midnight. Whenever I’m there in the evenings now there’s so many stockers working that it’s hard to get around them, so I don’t think that’s the reason.

Just turn the water off and deal with it in the morning.

Walmart has a plumbing department?

“Store can close at 9 or 10pm giving people plenty of time to shop.”

Let me guess — you’re an early riser, early to bed. Sundowner syndrome?

How did people repair broken pipes at 2am before the 24/7 stores?

They didn't. They simply closed the shut-off valve and went back to bed like normal people.

I have seen a lot of stores, shops, restaurants, and eateries change from pre-covid business hours. Dry cleaners, coffee ships, convenience stores, auto repair, retail, etc.

My bank hasn’t gone back to its pre-Covid hours. The only time I can really go is after 5pm or on Saturday. Well, they close at 5pm and are not open on Saturday. I have to wait until I have a weekday off work in order to make coin deposits.
