“Rendezvous With Rama”

That is one of my favorites, too. They keep threatening to make a movie of it. I am also a fan of “Childhood’s End”.

The Time Traders by Andre Norton 1958

There are several of Andre Norton's books available for free download on Project Gutenberg, including The Time Traders

Up until I found Blake Crouch, I didn't really like Sci-Fi other than maybe some random Asimov, 'Pebble in the Sky' being a favorite, as well as his short fiction.

Read Blake Crouch!

I would also recommend:

A Sci-Fi movie I've watched 4x now and still don't completely understand is, 'Primer.'

One of Jules Verne’s books comes to mind.

I haven’t seen it yet.

I still like the original.

LOL!

I read it when it came out & was just a kid. Loved it.

But I might agree with you if I read it again now.

Some excellent books listed here and elsewhere

However none has ever personally humbled me and taught me the harsh life lessons that Flowers for Algernon, by American author Daniel Keyes did. I pray that when my time comes I could face my death with the grace the hero of this book did

Butt Seriesly, i enjoyed The Marian Chronicles by Burrows....but that was in my preteen years.

Never heard of The Marian Chronicles. If you’re thinking of The Martian Chronicles, it was written by Ray Bradbury, not Burrows.

Great recommendations, all. FReepers are THE BEST!

Sadly, I forgot Ray Bradbury. I’ve read and loved all of his books. I guess I never thought of them as Science Fiction.

“We eagerly awaited the release of the movie Dune. It was a severe disappointment”

Have seen both Dune movies at the cinema and on TV many times, don’t think movies are as good as the books, but they are watchable.
Wife is not a scfi person but has read all the Dune books (she can almost tell you the genealogy of the characters), she is awaiting the next Dune movie and I will watch it with her, if one of the Dune movies is on TV she falls asleep with it on. She is also a big HARRY POTTER fan so I’m not sure of the connection.
Going to keep up with this thread and try to figure out what got most votes, also which authors showed up most think there maybe some surprises there at least at 4 or 5 rank.

The Riverworld series was good.
The SY FY Channel version sucked.

On the Beach totally freaked me out. I didn't want to finish it, but I read it in one sitting (until way past bed time) just because I felt like I owed it to the characters. Then I cried for humanity.

That's some powerful writing.

Read all three. I would like to see Ringworld and Rendezvous With Rama made into movies. I feel Lucifer’s Hammer has already been done, with the movies Armageddon and Deep Impact.

I’ll have to pick it up!

I’ll just throw this one out there, too-
the Doc Savage pulp novels from the 1930s and 40s.
