Inflammation is an essential part of the body's healing process. But when it persists, it can contribute to a wide range of complex diseases including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and autoimmune diseases.
Now, research shows a direct link between low levels of vitamin D and high levels of inflammation, providing an important biomarker to identify people at higher risk of or severity of chronic illnesses with an inflammatory component.
The study examined the genetic data of participants in the UK Biobank, using Mendelian randomization to show the association between vitamin D and C-reactive protein levels, an indicator of inflammation.
UniSA's Dr. Ang Zhou says: "High levels of C-reactive protein are generated by the liver in response to inflammation, so when your body is experiencing chronic inflammation, it also shows higher levels of C-reactive protein.
"This study examined vitamin D and C-reactive proteins and found a one-way relationship between low levels of vitamin D and high levels of C-reactive protein, expressed as inflammation.
"Boosting vitamin D in people with deficiencies may reduce chronic inflammation, helping them avoid a number of related diseases."
The study also raises the possibility that having adequate vitamin D concentrations may mitigate complications arising from obesity and reduce the risk or severity of chronic illnesses with an inflammatory component, such as CVDs, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases.
Professor Elina Hyppönen, says these results are important and provide an explanation for some of the controversies in reported associations with vitamin D.
"We have repeatedly seen evidence for health benefits for increasing vitamin D concentrations in individuals with very low levels, while for others, there appears to be little to no benefit." Prof Hyppönen says.
"These findings highlight the importance of avoiding clinical vitamin D deficiency, and provide further evidence for the wide-ranging effects of hormonal vitamin D."

The study describes this as an “L-shaped” curve, which it is.
If you have a bad CRP result, you might want to determine if you are getting enough Vitamin D.
Drink your milk! Get outside in the sunshine for crying out loud!
Vitamin D as in DUH. What do they tell ya. Stay out of the sun or you will get skin cancer. What really happens? Stay out of the sun and get everything else.
And drink more beer!
Seriously, I kept getting a low grade infection and doc could not figure it out till he asked about supplements. Seems I was taking too much D.
You need about 10 minutes/day if you are low on melanin.
Beer is much better for you than Flint , MI tap water!
I will just point out to people another way to think about this.
My CRP is normal. This causes Doctor’s to believe I don’t have a problem. It took a lot of pushing to get to the autoimmune tests that ended up showing a positive result.
So CRP is not always the end all be all test that Doctors make it out to be.
And as for Vitamin D..I have genetics that say I run low. I do run low at times but not all the time.
Even when I had an Xray that showed a lot of effusion and I was in a lot of pain..my inflammation markers were normal..and I have psoriasis
CRP is a great tool to look at if it is high. But if it isnt...that doesnt mean it is “in your head”.
Not in Seattle where in the summer you are supposed to use sunblock #4000 in the summer and in the winter - no sun.
How much were you taking?
I had found out I was depleted of vitamin D and I didn’t notice anything different.
I think people that consume the ideal amount of sodium and potassium have better skin and can stay in the sun.

Low on Vitamin D leaves you much more open to flu and colds including WuHan Flu. I have been taking D supps for 17 years and have not been troubled by virii since I started. Wife was a primary school teacher and brought home a virus at least a couple of times a year until we started on the D supps. She has been virus free in all that time, too, as have my three children.
Get a least a half hour of sun on bare arms every day in the summer and take D3 supplements through the rest of the year and avoid flu shots. You won’t need them.
I take 15,000 units/day.
I control my psoriasis with Turmeric and ginger. Works great. It also has eliminated the effects of the Arthritis I have had for a couple of decades.
Recommended amount is 4,000 units per day. More than 10,000 can be dangerous. Remember…vitamin d is actually a hormone.
