Wawa to double its store count in the Midstate, first new location announced

The battle of Sheetz versus Wawa in the Midstate (PA) continues and it is not going anywhere anytime soon as Wawa announces plans of doubling its store count in Central Pennsylvania over the next three to five years.

According to the store’s press release, the plan is to expand its footprint along the Susquehanna River, with its first store opening as early as 2024. There is even a potential for up to 40 additional stores in Midstate counties over the next few years. Get daily news, weather, breaking news and alerts straight to your inbox! “With a commitment to fulfilling lives, we’re thrilled to continue our growth and expansion in our existing markets to provide quality fresh food, beverages, and support to the community,” said John Poplawski, Vice President of Real Estate for Wawa. “In addition, Wawa’s continued expansion will mean even more convenience and new jobs in the Central Pennsylvania community.”

On the east coast, Wawa continues to open stores and plans to open 54 new stores in 2022.

200 First Street Associates, a commercial development company, says Wawa is planning for Enola in Cumberland County to be among the first new locations.

Provco, in collaboration with 200 First Street Associates, has submitted plans to East Pennsboro Township for approval. Details regarding the location were not available in recent East Pennsboro Township Planning Commission meeting minutes.

“We are thrilled that Wawa has selected our development to expand its footprint in Central Pennsylvania. Wawa and its development partner, Provco Group, recognize the unique benefits of this development,” said Sil Lutkewitte, President, 200 First Street Associates. “Not only will they be able to serve East Pennsboro Township, but also the Reserve at Summerdale’s 260 apartments and the highly travelled corridor of Routes 11/15 and I-81.”

WaWa is as woke woke as it gets.

Sheetz embraced the masks and the mask shaming as a corporate policy, they also used Covid as a cover to trim down their food menu, claiming it was the supply chain crisis that made them do it. All of them -- Wawa, Turkey Hill, Rutters, RoFa, Sheetz, 7-11 -- are big business and crowd out locally-owned competitors. They want you to fight over who makes a better sandwich because it helps cover up what they're doing to locally owned companies.

Not sure how they are woke, as I’ve seen no evidence of that.

Wawa has great, cheap coffee and their gas is usually competitively priced. Their staff is typically a few notches above other stores in terms of attitude and friendliness.

Where I live, Wawas can be a hangout of sorts for eccentric characters (of the non LGBT variety). They tend to be colorful, but harmless (at least so far). It is kind of fun the way Wawas buzz with activity.

I have a Sheetz closer to me, but I prefer Wawa.

Since the gas station nearest to my water well is 5 miles away, they should bring back MTBE, which is what they used here before ethanol. (Reason they stopped using MTBE is groundwater contamination. Some states actually banned it, but it isn’t banned at the Federal level. Since the Feds wouldn’t grant the oil companies immunity from lawsuits over MTBE groundwater contamination, the oil companies stopped using it.)

Both MTBE and ethanol are used as octane enhancers and also make the gasoline meet the EPA requirement for oxygenated gasoline.

And usage of MTBE or ethanol actually reduces the cost of gasoline, because they’re able to take “BOB” (before oxygenate blending) gas which has an octane rating of about 85, blend in 10% ethanol (or MTBE, in years past) and that brings the octane up to 87.

The other octane booster that was used is TEL (lead) and that can no longer be used because it turns people into retards, among other things.

There’s no such thing as a ham and cheese hoagie. We are talking about two different things. With that said, there’s nothing wrong with a ham and cheese sub. Jersey Mikes has no idea what a hoagie is. I’m not sure about Publix, we don’t have them around here.

Hoagie are a Philadelphia Italian deli thing. There is only one bakery in the world that makes hoagie roll. When you walk into a real deli, you nose is hit with aroma of hanging meats and cheeses. There should be a big pickle barrel, not refrigerated, right next to the deli counter. Hoagies are made by slicing meats and cheese directly on the roll, no weighing like at subway. These delis have a small section of convenience items that typically have dust on them because no one ever buys them. One other thing hoagies never have mayo on them. It’s oil and vinegar on roll and vegetables.

I’m well aware of ethanol’s use as an octane enhancer. It is a “cheap” way to raise octane. I understand all that.

I can buy 90 octane ethanol free gas, it’s just hard to come by, although it is the same or only a little more than 93 ethanol premium.

You like ethanol, fine. I don’t. I admit the reality of ethanol not going away, but I am not required to like it.

Working for them is a different experience than being a customer.

The hoagies in Williamsport (more hoagie shops per capita than probably anywhere in the world) are to die for if you ever get up that way.

In FL, we aren’t so blessed, and we take what we can get. Publix subs are great - right below a Philly or Williamsport independent sub shop.

Williamsport sub shops also have great cheese steaks if you can fathom that someone outside of Philly can create one.

In apartments on Old State Road I’m the 80s, right near the bike shop. You probably ate at Pinocchio’s and the Court Diner.

LOL, I did eat at Pinnochio’s multiple times. I saw the diner, but didn’t eat there. Pizza at Pinnochio’s was great.
I had a bigger job on E State Street & Providence Road.

Where the trolley line ends, and the train line ends...
It was a pain in the butt.
Primary, secondary, comms lines, crazy angles & framing, and catenaries for the trolley.
All this work for...a new super Wawa.

I’ve seen no engine or carburetor problems due to the use of ethanol gas. But as I mentioned, MTBE would be better but for that groundwater contamination problem.

I walked into a WaWa recently here in Florida.

Their pricing seemed geared to making bean counters happy.

I assume people like their food prepared to order since it seemed the only possible reason to like WaWa, as their gas was priced within the going rates.
