Hoagie are a Philadelphia Italian deli thing. There is only one bakery in the world that makes hoagie roll. When you walk into a real deli, you nose is hit with aroma of hanging meats and cheeses. There should be a big pickle barrel, not refrigerated, right next to the deli counter. Hoagies are made by slicing meats and cheese directly on the roll, no weighing like at subway. These delis have a small section of convenience items that typically have dust on them because no one ever buys them. One other thing hoagies never have mayo on them. It’s oil and vinegar on roll and vegetables.
The hoagies in Williamsport (more hoagie shops per capita than probably anywhere in the world) are to die for if you ever get up that way.
In FL, we aren’t so blessed, and we take what we can get. Publix subs are great - right below a Philly or Williamsport independent sub shop.
Williamsport sub shops also have great cheese steaks if you can fathom that someone outside of Philly can create one.
