Perhaps you didn’t understand. Top 10 movies per week often average around 50mil. AVERAGE. I didn’t say all movies are always 50mil, or that huge hits (by PUBLIC viewpoint) like Star Wars and JW only make 50mil the first week. Or that any given #10 will make nearly that much - some are at 10mil and still make the top 10.

You guys keep talking about ROI. Duh, it has failed for the studio with that. It's a “bomb” for the studio.

Um, without ROI no films would be made.
This is not Dementia Joe's government who just keep printing even more money and sending inflation skyrocketing.

We're talking about if it made a dent in the typical weekly ratings.

You are.
And it made far lower than the last iteration of the same movie series.
Read post #51.

Sorry. It's a “hit” by public standards.

Nope.

Not a huge one, likely, but still made the charts.

Making $70 million less that the last iteration of the same movie series is not a “hit”.
It bombed.
And it will do even worse outside the country with all the banning.

Except this particular movie series made a massive $120 million the first week last time, and only $50 million the first week this time round. It's a great big all time hit franchise. But it didn't do well this time no matter how you look at it. But keep pushing it anyways. Chuckle.

It’s the second-highest income this week.

That means it’s a “hit”. Period. At least relatively speaking.

And if it keeps making c40 mil for the next few weeks that’s still a relative hit.

We’re comparing it to CONTEMPORARY FILMS THIS MONTH, not its predecessors in the series or other cartoons.

(Do not read this as defending the movie or any such thing. It’s just looking at reality. The best thing you can say is it is low compared to its predecessors - but that may be because no one is going to movies since the COVID hysteria, which has killed theater attendance more than Hulu itself did.)

It will make its money back, but it won’t spur sequels or a lot of merchandising. THAT is where the cash is these days.

I spent some time reading reviews last night. The interesting thing is very few of them mentioned the controversial things we read around this forum. What I was reading talked about the fact it was just boring.

The woke nature of movies will change as the revenues shift. The “show” part of the name is not long separated from “business.” And Top Gun shows people WILL return to the theater. Thor will show the same thing. Woke Juneteenth themed stuff won’t.

And the Dino movie was not very good.

(Not defending the content of this dog) The marketing problem with this movie is it was sold as a part of the Toy Story genre. It isn’t. A lot of people, in their reviews, express dismay at what comes across as a “bait and switch.”

There seem to be a lot of issues with the execution on this movie. My guess is the people in Disney found a slot to unload the movie just to get it off the books.

Tell that to the movie goers who made “Top Gun Maverick “ an all time record for a Tom Cruise movie. By far.
And an all time Memorial Day weekend record, despite covid.
Wanna try again?

In the second week of Jurassic World. Couldn't even beat Jurassic World in its second week. Not impressive. Ptetty pathetic.

I saw the world numbers for weekend, they were pretty bad. Chances of this movie breaking even are not good, I look for a loss on it.

Now Top Gun on the other hand re-cements Tom Cruise as the biggest star in the world. Moving in toward $900 Million in grosses I predict it will make a $1 Billion and then some. Outstanding box office.

I hope it bombs. But I've seen woke movies celebrated on FR for bombing in their first week that later picked up steam.

When Jack Nicholson played The Joker he negotiated a very lucrative contract, maybe the richest at the time and then some. He got his regular salary at the time, plus a hefty backend deal, plus a cut of any Batman movie made afterwards by Warners whether he was in it or not and lastly he saw the value of toys and merchandising and got a piece of that to. Now that is a contract.

That is what Jack a very rich actor.

More like they estimated how well it would NEED to do in order to pay for production costs.

Also, the weekend grosses are in a bad pattern

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl6456065/?ref_=bo_da_table_3

Friday $20.7m
Sat. $16.3m
Sun. $14m

For a KIDS movie, you would expect the Saturday numbers to be higher than Friday.

Parents aren’t taking their kids to see it.
