The race is on for One-Eyed Willy's treasure, as part of the shipwreck of the boat that inspired 'The Goonies' has been found. Marine archaeologists have recovered timbers from the hull of the 17th-century Spanish galleon Santo Cristo de Burgos in sea caves in Oregon, USA.

Sea caves in Oregon connecting to underground tunnels…ON OAK ISLAND?!?!?!
PinGGG!.......................
“The Spanish attempted to limit this export of silver by limiting the number of galleons. This resulted in the building the largest ships the technology and materials allowed.”
Government regulation even then.
From Spain and wrecks off coast of Oregon...yeah, I’d say it veered slightly off course.
Not to be confused with the other one-eyed willy...
If I remember correctly, ships from Mexico could sail West due to the wind currents blowing from East to West, but could not retrace their steps.
They then had to sail North from the Philippines to catch winds blowing from West to East, where they would reach the North American continent, then sail south to Mexico ports.
I would say the Manila Galleon was probably on the correct course for home when it sank.
It sounds like all they discovered were pieces of the wreck. Not the wreck itself. If anything other pieces remain of it.
Spain had a complex web of regulations and tax laws applied to different parts of its vast empire in the New World and the Old. Trade with the New World vice royalties was very tightly controlled and heavily taxed. Spain was the first truly global empire and its rise from a handful of poor feudatories in the north west of Spain to its zenith in the 16th and 17th centuries is a fascinating and sobering narrative as the great empire then began its long downward trajectory that would end in 1898.
Serendipitous. I just watched Captain Kidd and Long John Silver on YouTube tonight. I love the old adventure and pirate movies and books.

I’d say you have nonidea what you speak of.
That is amazing!! I saw gold coins, and what could be gold or silver ingots. I recently watched a TV series called “La Fortuna” with Stanley Tucci. It’s on AMC+, and YouTubeTV. It’s a similar story, based on a book. Ships of Spain were stopped on the high sea by the British. The ship “La Fortuna” was sunk by the English Navy. The Captain of the fleet, who was on one of the other ships, lost his family on “La Fortuna.” They were headed to their new home. The remainder of the fleet, along with the Captain were taken prisoner. There is a lot of Spanish spoke, so you’ll need to pay attention to the captions. The basis of the story is the court fight by the Spanish government, to get possession of the treasure that was onboard the ship. Stanley Tucci is a deep sea explorer/adventurer, found the wreck off the coast of Florida (if I recall correctly), and confiscated it all.
Thanks Red Badger.
Yes, I believe their CAFE standards required at least 3000 miles per galleon.
American silver? You mean Mexican?
I love “The Goonies!” One of my favorite movies of all time!

Not really. Following the trade winds east, you arrive from the Orient up in the pacific northwest and then follow the coast down. When going west, you are headed our at a much lower latitude.
its a classic sailing route.
If you haven’t already read The Pyrates, by George MacDonald Fraser, you really should. Lots of fun.
