Weekly Garden Thread - March 19-25, 2022 [Favorite Spring Flowers Edition]
March 19, 2022 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memorium

Posted on 03/19/2022 7:58:55 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Ugh! Sorry about your peas! Squirrels and chipmunks will dig them up to get to the pea that they grow from. Rabbits will definitely eat them. Could be voles or field mice too! If it were warmer it could be slugs, sow bugs or pill bugs. Chickens probably, maybe some birds like pigeons.

I have a 2’ x 6’ wooden frame around a slightly raised bed. I just planted my peas yesterday. I have some wire rabbit fencing that I will arch over them and cover them with a light insect barrier. It will give them time to grow large enough so the squirrels do not bother them. (once the pea seed is used up by the plant less incentive for squirrels to go digging. ) Once they get to about 8-10 inches tall I will remove the cover and put some chicken wire for them to climb. (My whole garden is surrounded by chicken wire.)

On the south side of the peas I will plant beets and Japanese turnips and radishes. (Also covered while they germinate and grow.)They should all mature around the same time in May and then I can plant something else like zucchini or cucumbers in that space.

Good luck with your chicken!

Locusts! What was God thinking...

(Protein! Bugs for the NWO food revolution! "You will eat bugs and enjoy it!" Slide over. )

In some countries they feed dried locust to the cattle! (Sensible, since the locusts probably ate all the grass!)

Grasshoppers, eh? Not sure what insect I like least....sow bugs are kind of gross I guess. Centipedes....kind of icky.

Interesting bugs seen last year : Praying Mantis and Walking Stick

I use them too! I have been putting down milky spore powder and using parasitic nematodes for japanese beetles and other things. I seem to have a lot of assassin bugs and praying mantises. ( I do leave some area’s pretty wild and hope that helps.)

Sow bugs or maybe pill bugs eat young seedlings. I really do not like them. I think there are some controls for them.

Grasshoppers. You control them with NOLO Bait. (From Arbico Organics!)

thanks, i didn’t know about that list- I am not a huge veggie eater anyways and don’t eat fish- but i do eat lettuce, tomatoes occasionally &( and do suffer from tomatoes) Eggs which i don’t have a problem with- (Note, the sulfur smell can be tamped down with peptol bismol- which apparently binds to sulpher and neutralizes it)- everything else in the list i don’t eat- so i cant speak to how they woudl affect me-

How have those measures worked for you so far.

I’m hoping the nematodes will help with our out of control tick population.

You sound like you are also dealing with a mast cell disorder.

My list of can’t eat is much greater. I never would have thought veggies would be such an issue for someone but they can be.

Apparently alliums are part of the Amaryllis family, although there appears to be some debate about that. I had heard they were part of the Lily family, and so if you were allergic to lilies, you could have a food cross reactivity with plants from that family.

Lilies bloom around late July and August around here, with Aug being my worst month for about three weeks.

i don’t seem to suffer allergies anymore like i did as a kid- ragweed was terrible for me- but i outgrew it apparently- My mom used to grow lots of flowers- and I’d help weed them, and i don’t recall being bothered with allergies doing so- she was big on lilies too- and poppies-

Your food intolerances can be a form of allergic reaction. It’s not always nasal symptoms. I can elucidate if you’d like, but mine flare up as food issues, not asthma or sinus or skin issues.

I can’t remember if I’ve suggested this before, but there’s a plant called Toona sinensis that is supposed to taste like garlic and onions. Depending on which molecule it is that you’re reacting to, that might be a safe substitute.

I do have asthma, and used to get attacks from pollen, but that seems tomhave gone away mostly. Now just exercise will trigger an attack.

If you don’t mind the question, do,you suffer muscle burning, weakness? I notice that this issue intensifies if I eat tomatoes, potatoes, (though I can alleviate it a bit with magnesium.) The burning muscle issue is like the muscles being tense and overworked to the point where they burn, like a lactic acid burning feeling that subsides when a person rests- mine is constant for some reason.

Reason I ask is because I noticed that going on a “caveman diet” of meat only basically, the muscle issue calms down a lot, but flares up when I eat pizza, to tomatoes etc- so likely like you say, it’s an allergic reaction maybe.

I can look it up, but thanks. I do a fair bit of research on different topics so I’m used to,it

I’m in North Carolina now. Had my first snake of the season while clearing some mulch. Nothing but a black racer or a worm snake but it is warming up.

Yeah, when I am reacting to something I feel very weak and tired.

I’ve been reading up,on cortisol or adrenal fatigue lately. A .ot of the sy ptoms, most of them actually, go along with what i experience. Especially things like “getting run down easily” and “mid afternoon crash” (where the person has to recharge because their ‘internal battery’ is nearly drained, where a normal person woul dhave still 3/4 juice in the battery),,and also, geeling best around 11: pm.

I think part of my issue is perhaps that. The cortisol is supposed to,increase in stress, and help, the person through it, but in adrenal fatigue, that of course isnt the case, so it exhausts the body fighting stress, or allergies etc and the person is left drained feeling. I think it links to,the muscle burning too, but not sure. I do know one thing, I don’t have nearly enough internal battery charge to make it through the day, and its a constant strain On the maucles. And when allergies hit, I think it just makes everything worse.

I have not eliminated them, but I have seen a reduction in the number of Japanese beetles and fewer june bugs. (From The milky spore and parastic nematodes.) The neighbors: Its not like I am going to sneak over to the neighbors house and treat their lawn, so they still hatch there.

I saw a large reduction in the number of grasshoppers last year from using the NOLO bait (Which I need to go and buy!).

Good luck! (You can buy “Mosquito Bits” locally for any indoor fungus gnats!)

if you are having mid afternoon crash- i mean like hard crash where you cant stay awake anymore- and you feel best around 11 pm or so- then definitely look into adrenal fatigue- or cortisol issues- a lot of the symptoms have been what i have been experiencing for many years- but i go and get tested for adrenals, and by endocrinologist, and they can’t find anything- it;s frustrating-
