Weekly Garden Thread - March 19-25, 2022 [Favorite Spring Flowers Edition]
March 19, 2022 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memorium

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Weather is definitely warming here in SW Pennsylvania and I have to ask those in a similar zone (5) what is the best time for planting onion and garlic bulbs?

What are the best varieties?

This is also a time for letting others on the thread know that I have hummingbird vine and rose of sharon seeds up the wazoo and will send them to anyone who freep mails me for an address and sends a self-addressed stamped envelope as long as supplies last. This is a good time of year for planting both.

I saw my first robins today!!!!!

Yesterday was so gorgeous I braved the much in the garden and got some buckets set up for bucket carrots and put some seeds in two of them.

I also sprinkled a bunch of scallion seeds in a small section of my raised bed and covered them very lightly with straw.

Anyone here use Real Growers Recharge?

I starting using it about 2 weeks ago and see good growth each time I use it.

Basically instant Compost Tea.

Hard neck garlic is best planted in the fall. Something about the freezing of them is what causes the cloves to form instead of having one giant bulb.

I started a bunch of Stuttgarter onions in Feb and they are looking good now.

I put in scallion seeds yesterday outside and covered them with straw. Time will tell.

For garlic, I like Great Northern White and Romanian Red. Both produced huge cloves.

Music is another variety but they didn’t do as well in my garden. I planted some anyways this year in the raised garlic bed. It should be interesting to see how they all compare this year.

Stuttgarter onions produce a decent size bulb and they are good long storage onions and heirloom. You can save the seeds if they don’t cross pollinate.

For onions I planted Red Wing hybrid as a good long storage onion, and Rossa di Milano. Sadly, Johnny’s Selected seeds is sold out of them already.

I’m in NH. Same growing zone.

Wish I could eat garlic. I used to eat it raw, and include it in many things, but I developed an allergy to it as I can’t even smell it anymore without feeling sick almost. Even a little makes me sweat, makes me dizzy as all get out, shaky and wow, it takes a view days to recover, and it’s all I can taste for 2 days. I used to really crave garlic bread 🍞 too. Also,we’d make a garlic, oil dip for regular bread that wa delicious too.

Onions also affect me now, but not as bad as the garlic does. I especially, love the Vidalia onions. Wish they would grow up here though. (I think they can’t right?) We make a a great sauce with Vidalia that is absolutely, great on pork, chicken, ribs especially, hotdogs, even hamburgers. It’s wicked good!

Never heard of it- sounds interesting. We have a modest sized compost, but I think a lot must leech Into the soil under the compost we don’t really have enough for whole garden though.

Onions and garlic are the same plant family.

It’s not surprising that if you are allergic to one, you’re allergic to the other.

We got a quarter inch of rain this week and this greened things up considerably.
Our three raised beds are turned over with fresh fertilizer.

We have new bird netting around all three, supporter by a one inch pic frame to keep the cat out.

A few of our peppers are stared indoors.
Looking good !
