Folks,
Due to a number of painfully obvious factors, I've decided to add an EDC firearm to my repertoire.
Firearms wise, a Sig Sauer P365 or a S&W Airweight 38 are in the lead. Yes, I know these are designed for a woman to carry in her lady-bits. However, in my situation, simply being able to return fire will be plenty 99% of the time, if not, I have other man sized weapons I can bring.
I need something to carry without fail, comfort and concealability are far and away the most important.
Gun safe wise, from time to time, I need to attend/enter places with metal detectors and need a place to temporarily stow a fire arm. Never long term, but for a couple of hours attending a sporting event, PTA meeting, something that could spiral out of control if a little person with a small brain and a tiny amount of authority discovered any subterfuge.
Any advice will be much appreciated and I hope to weigh it all over the next day or so before making a purchase.
“Anyone had experience with either the Ruger LCP or LCP2?
Boy, those both came HIGHLY recommended, just nudged out of the top two, but hope your question generates some good discussion because I could very well end up with that model as well!”
My friend has one and swears by it. Get the Ruger LCP2, she says; you will be happy. Feels good in the hand (I held it), perfect size, nice weight, looks good, a great woman’s gun as per someone whose advice I trust.
Have you fired either? With today’s guns, especially from decent companies there isn’t much difference in quality, so it all comes down to feel.
Neither of those guns are designed for women. And you might want to consider, if your carrying spare ammunition, it’s much easier to reload a magazine with 10 rounds into a 365 then 5rds in a .38.
A lightweight, snub nosed.38 is not an easy gun to shoot and after 10-12’ it can be quite inaccurate. S&Ws desire to make them light, compromised the weight that helped with recoil. It’s designed more for a contact shot into someone’s rib cage while your tussling.
The 365 has a bunch of different models now and is a great gun. I’m a proponent of more is better. Controllability is better. With that….I’d go with the 365.
No personal experience but folks I know that have the LCP are very happy. Good luck finding .380ammo
My smallest handgun is an LCP Custom. It’s pretty much the same as the original LCP but with a slightly taller front sight. I like it. Addng a Hogue Handall grip sleeve made it more pleasant to shoot. Recommended, the pistol and the Hogue grip.
Next smallest that I have is a Kel-Tec P11. It’s recently been discontinued, but used pistols for sale are probably still around. I wouldn’t recommend that one. Very heavy trigger pull and you have to be careful with your grip on it or it will jam. I bought it mainly because capacity is good for a pistol that small, it will take magazines from my S&W 5904, and my experience with revolvers made the trigger not too much of a problem. Buy something else.
.
Get a gun safe that has a cable to loop around the seat frame. They can still steal the safe but they will have to work at it.
With my Kel-Tek P-11 I found using the grip extension made a huge difference in “limp wrist” jams.

The difference between the LCP and LCPII is the original is a hammer fired weapon (although the hammer is not external) and the LCPII is a striker fired weapon. Both are good and reliable, but it is very difficult to find defensive ammo for the .380. I would go for a sub compact 9 like the Hellcat, the Ruger Max 9, S&W Shield 2.0 Plus, or Sig 365X in 9mm. Practice and self defense ammo are widely available for the 9mm.
There are times when you aren’t allowed to carry. So the choices are to leave the gun at home or lock it up.
38 Special +P Ruger LCR
.
5 shot Revolver,
Love it, several years running always goes Bang.
Not Bad recoil.
Money well spent with this
One,,,EDC.
Tried the Ruger 38 LCR?
LOVE Mine.
Yep, you don't. The 365 is striker fired.
I must strongly recommend the Taurus GX4.
I love my Ruger LCP.
On the negative side, .380 does not have the stopping power of larger handgun calibers.
On the positive side, it is VERY concealable. It also has low recoil and is very controllable. So much so that I am more accurate with my LCP then with any other handgun. I have never had one misfire or one misfeed.
I love it so much, and it is so inexpensive, that I’ve purchased three of them.
Not a “Safe” but I know a man who has a leather “Bible Case” complete with a cross and a dove. But, it is really a soft-shell gun case. It holds a short-barreled .44 magnum. Nobody breaks into a car to steal a Bible.
Wheel gun for me.
I carry an oldie, all-steel (not an air weight) snub that’s proven to be pretty darn accurate considering what it is.
Carry it IWB. It’s relatively light weight, easy to conceal and easy to draw when needed.
I also practice with it a couple of times a month which includes practicing the draw, a quick reload with a speed loader and Bianchi speed strips...just to keep me on my toes.
I also carry a speed loader or two (winter) and/or a couple of speed strips (summer). IF I have to shoot more than 10-15 rounds, I probably shouldn’t be shooting to begin with.
I have a Springfield XD9 that I love to pieces, and it hasn’t given me problems yet. The XDS is available for a smaller version, but I can’t speak to its functionality.
My husband’s Heckler and Koch P7 is also incredibly reliable and very accurate. I’ve fired it, too, and it’s just the right size for me (I’m a tiny lady). I liked it a lot.
Admittedly, I’m not as knowledgeable as probably 90% of the Freepers on here (more, likely...), but I’m going by my personal experience.
