Study shows light to moderate coffee consumption is associated with health benefits (Only ground coffee lowered mortality risk)
Medical Xpress / Queen Mary, University of London / European Journal of Preventative Cardiology ^ | Feb. 10, 2022 | Dr. Judit Simon, Ph.D. et al

Having up to three cups of coffee a day has a protective effect on heart health. It also reduces the overall mortality rate and the risk of stroke.

The participants were divided into three groups: non-coffee drinkers, light to moderate coffee-drinkers and those who consumed a significant amount of coffee a day. The researchers also used MRI scans to gain a better understanding of how coffee-drinking habits affect the anatomy and functioning of the heart over time.

Professor Steffen Petersen said: "The large sample size, linked health data, and detailed heart MRI scans available in the UK Biobank offered a strong base to address this research question. According to the results, light to moderate coffee consumption is not damaging from a cardiovascular point of view, and it could be beneficial. As far as we know, this has been the largest study to date which focused on the effect of coffee on cardiovascular health."

Co-author Dr. Zahra Raisi-Estabragh, added: "Most of the participants drank either ground or instant coffee. The ground coffee in moderate amounts was associated with lower mortality risk—but this benefit was not found amongst the regular instant coffee drinkers."

Dr. Judit Simon, Ph.D. said: "Light to moderate coffee consumption was associated with a 12 percent lower risk of overall mortality, and with a 17 percent lower risk of death caused by cardiovascular diseases compared to non-coffee drinkers. In addition, from half to three cups of coffee was associated with a 21 percent lower risk of stroke."

"It's also important to highlight that even for those who were heavy coffee-drinkers, we did not find evidence of negative cardiovascular consequences,"—said Dr. Maurovich-Horvat. "However, there were no positive health benefits observed in this group—as in the group of the light to moderate drinkers."

What exactly is a significant amount of coffee? I think I can answer that. Years ago I used to drink 32 ounces a day. And that’s not including ice tea or caffeinated sodas.

Then one day I was wondering “Gee. Why am I getting headaches every day?”

Duh! I now drink about 12 ounces per day. And no other caffeine.

Between the prunes and coffee, how do I get away from the bathroom?

There is absolutely nothing better for longevity, reducing heart disease, prolonging onset of dementia, and avoiding virus diseases such as covid, than DAILY moderate aerobic exercise. Since I began that daily routine, my health is soooooo much better than in my late 50’s age. I am nearing my 82nd BD.

My daily routine consists of walking on treadmill set at 2 deg upslope at 25 mph with 1 lb wrist weights and swinging my arms all around. After walking 3/4 of mile, I follow up with 30 pulls of 10 kg weights on the weight machine.
My only nutritional intake is 1-a-day vitamin pill+couple of D vitmin pills. I eat lots of fast food at Panera bread, Taco bell and Arby’s. And any fruits on sale at Aldi. As for coffee, I usually drink 2 cups/day using decaf ground coffee.

Two clarifications...

...”at 25 mph

Seems like you have superpowers.

...”2 cups/day using decaf ground coffee.

Drinking decaf is like kissing your sister!

I drink one 12oz mug of coffee in the morning while I do the daily cryptogram, and I grind the beans just before brewing the coffee in a single-serve k-cup for my Keurig machine, and that's it.

I was just thinking about that LOL
25 mph is WRIONG! Glad you caught it.
It is 25 minutes/mile.

I agree about decaf, but caffeine can wake me up during night, with heart pounding loud. My coffee drink is more like half and half + lots of sugar with some coffee added.

When the cost is minimal, other confounding factors were removed, and they had MRIs to validate true health status, the likelihood of no causation is greatly lowered and worth the risk of having coffee to potentially get said benefits.

Study after study shows the incredible health benefits of walking. In terms of bang for your buck it is the most efficient exercise there is. If you have not exercised in years and want to start a health journey then start walking for 40 minutes at night after dinner. Or anytime for that matter. If you have a dog then take him too - he’ll love you for it and it makes it that much more enjoyable.

I’m not much of a coffee drinker.
I’ve tried to develop a habit, because I like the aroma, but I usually stop after a few weeks. I do use caffeine pills from time to time for an energy boost. These pills are 200mg each.
Hopefully, I still get some of those health benefits.

“ health benefits of walking…”

I agree. I found the rowing machine at the gym, 30 min a day of hard rowing along with a couple of walks with the dog and a better diet and In two weeks I felts so much better. Better food and some exercise can help indeed.
