How Larry David Faked a Mental Health Episode to Leave the Army One Year Early

Although he's now one of the most lauded comedians in Hollywood, Larry David never saw himself becoming a writer or a comedian. After graduating from the University of Maryland in 1970, he was lost and had little direction from his parents, who wanted him to take a job as a mailman.

The future writer for "Saturday Night Live," co-creator of "Seinfeld" and creator of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" joined the Army Reserve for one very important reason: to avoid going to Vietnam. He regretted it almost immediately.

He had never held a weapon, and he was terrible at push-ups and sit-ups. Basic training did not go well for David. That wasn't even the worst part of it, he told Howard Stern in a 2015 interview.

"I had an apartment in New York and I would go to Brooklyn for the weekend, stay with my parents, and spend all Saturday and Sunday at Floyd Bennett Field in a freezing airplane hangar," he said.

He’s nothing but a coward. I’m surprised that he feels like he could tell that story now and expect any kind of support or accolades.

USAF 68-76

You could probably tell that my wife had to pull me off of the ceiling after I read that crappy article.

Yes, I believe I can see that. It has taken me many years to realize that some on this earth, living this journey, will never appreciate another souls sacrifice especially those in the military. They never want to see the truth about who wants to rule, torture, enslave, or kill us. Our dedication to life enables these vermin to remain alive as well. Rest your weary head and great soul knowing that you are a few amongst many who did what those would not, ready and willing to pay the ultimate sacrafice. God Bless

“Curb Your Enthusiasm” is “Seinfeld “ with married couples, and swearing. It’s also brilliant.

A lot of the show — most of the show — is making fun of Larry. I don’t think the ideal Larry who makes fun of the real Larry would be that great either and I don’t think Larry would ever really change, but the guy does kinda know that he can be absurd and annoying.

Larry David is very talented and funny, but he is a nut Politically, and in general.

At least Michael Richards who played Kramer served honorably in the Army(1970-72).

He swore an oath, then faked to get out of it. He is a reprehensible human. A man would have fulfilled his oath of enlistment then got out.
I dealt with these weak scumbags when I served, every now and then. They are not worthy of anything except contempt. Especially if they brag about it years later.

20. If you are referring to David being Jewish, you missed the following guys I met in Nam or who I knew served thereafter there.

Matt - MP, along with AMA volunteer doctor (6 months), in Bac Lieu.
Steve Klein USA, An Loi, Mekong Delta riverine ops support base
David Granick - ROK advisor, Black Horse Div, II Corps
Roger Snyder - KIA - didn’t know him but he lived next door to my cousin in Baltimore
Jules Cherry - USA, combat soldier
Glen Siegal USA, CAPS lt.
Alan Labowitz - B52 combat pilot
Lt. Col. - USA, POL commander, II Corps up to Pleiku region
CMDR. Paul Frommer - Tet in Saigon
CMDR. Norman - Light Cruiser commander, Gulf of Tonkin/NVN ops, WW2 vet

And others in one of my books from WW 1 thru my son as one of the first U.S. soldiers into Iraq during OIF, 299th Army Engineers, MRB, and sharpshooter with kills.

Myself - MAcv-accredited journalist, SVN and on own in Cambodia

Klinger has the same problem that Big Mike has when he sports a dress.

Better to find out that they don't have what it takes in a dank airplane hanger than a foxhole.

Agree. His early exit may have saved a few lives on our side. Still, he's a creep; and I also agree that the military has no business publishing this—unless it's used for target practice.
