We just received a blessed week of hard rain. Hopefully more is on the way. We've suffered under a 10-year drought and water restrictions.

Praying for more and more and more.

Plants are happy. Very very happy:

Hibiscus has perked up:

Cyclamen loved the rain:

Gaillardia too:

The only member of the family that wasn't happy was this one:

I just took this picture a few minutes ago. Sunflower in the window, with snow and about 2 degrees outside.

Reminder of my Prepping/Homesteading files available for all to download; https://permasteader.com/cloud/index.php/s/H8iLwmfLHiGFyjG

After ten long years, I finally did a little canning. Made 14 pints of chicken stock using carcasses I’d been collecting in the freezer for about a year. Did the pressure canning on the glass top range which worked out ok. Barely got hot enough as I never had to turn it down from high after the weight started jiggling.

I only buy whole chickens as it’s a better deal and the only way I cook them anymore is spatchcock and roast. Never a dry or rubbery breast again as long as I stay away from Tyson’s oversized birds. I’ve been buying Springer brand which are always smaller and seem like less of a factory bird.

The kids like my chicken so much that they no longer like fried chicken. They like moist without the grease.

Skipped the gardening for a couple of years while I worked on other things like a fence around 12 acres. With prices the way they are, I won’t be skipping the garden this year.

Meat goat numbers should be increasing soon. Got three does so anywhere from 3-6 kids should pop out over the next month or two. I don’t have any cross fencing or pens for selective or timed breeding. It’s pretty much a free for all out there. Two bucks so who knows who did who.

Got lucky as a neighbor who has horses was looking to get rid of four round bales of hay which he gave to me. His old mare has bad teeth and can no longer yank hay from a round bale so he swapped to square bales so he can pull flakes for her. The four bales should get me through winter.

I would love to have a full size tomato like one could easily buy in a store 55 years ago.

Happy New Year from southern New Hampshire!

I wrapped up 2021 by transferring over a ton of compost from our flatbed trailer to either our future two raised beds or a small pile just outside the gate. That took the effort of two days, helped in a great deal by my YardMax powered dumper. Now, I can pickup a pallet of wood pellets, this week.

Today, I ordered a packet of sunflower seeds for next year. Supposed to grow nearly 20ft tall. We will see.

Welcome to a new year. Let’s put that crop storm behind us!

Good morning from Oregon...Happy New Year...thanks for all your year long work
Diana ...it’s 11 degrees with snow on the ground here...and since we are doing a major remodel this year at our new home...no garden, except in pots, maybe. But I’m a sucker for seed catalogs!

High of 73 today & lots of rain overnight & in the morning - the ground is sloppy muddy. We’ve had some fog, some windows on the shop are ‘sweating’ (cooler inside than out). We did see a peep of sun this afternoon and it’s quite humid aka T-shirt weather. It’s hard to believe it’s New Year’s Day with this sort of non-winter weather.

That may change shortly - big glob of rain/front coming in & we have a potential snow event Jan. 3, Monday morning. The ground is very wet, roads are warm so there should not be much accumulation (ok by me!).

Walking the dog this evening, I noticed dandelions blooming in the fields and the camellias think it’s spring time & are blooming - I hope the buds don’t freeze later on.

Happy New Year to all!

I am thinking of putting in a salsify patch. My question is, how invasive are they? Like ramps or like mint? Or worse, like morning glory or horsetail!

We have plenty of place for them to spread but would rather not have the neighbors showing up with pitchforks and torches.

We live in a zone 5 area. Plenty of water.
