The average family is spending an extra $30/week on groceries: How to cut down on your bill

MADISON, Wis.– It’s not just you: the price of everything from clothes and cars to gas and groceries is up. According to the Department of Labor, prices have increased 6.8% from 2020. That’s the highest rate of inflation in nearly 40 years.

Some of the most noticeable impacts are at the grocery store, where it’s getting harder to not only find some products but also reasonable prices. The average family is spending an extra $30 per month on groceries compared to November 2020.

RELATED: Two years ago, the average household paid $113/week for groceries. Today, they’re paying $144.

“The only way you’re going to see a grocery store rollback a price increase is if the suppliers and supply chain who gave them that product reduce their prices,” Brandon Scholz, the president of the Wisconsin Grocers Association, said.

Those challenges have only worsened in the past year, and that’s why prices have gone up and continue to do so.

“You can check advertising and go online and do all that research,” Scholz added, “but no, there’s not a simple way to say, ‘Who’s got everything I want at the right prices?'”

Here are a few ways customers can shop smarter:

When products are on sale, buy extra. Most items go on sale every six to eight weeks. Avoid food that spoils quickly. Feeding America found the average family of four throws away $133 of produce each month. Shop in-season. Many Dane County Farmers’ Market producers offer their products online, even during the winter.

“A lot of people have this misconception that the only people who come to a food pantry are ones who are experiencing homelessness or are unemployed,” said Helen Osborn, the director of operations at The River Food Pantry Madison.

“That’s not true. Many of them do have housing, and they are employed. But with all the costs, all their bills, sometimes being employed isn’t enough,” she continued.

More than 3,500 new families registered to pick up curbside groceries at The River during the pandemic, and the Madison-based pantry continues to serve 1,000+ families per week.

“If you’re facing concerns about paying your bills and feeding your family, please reach out to us,” Osborn said.

Lesko Brandon has got this handled!

Groceries are up, gasoline is up and natural gas is up.

40 bucks more for the same amount of natural gas as last year in November...

Here’s a question for these “How to save money” hint-people: Since I have used and continue using every “hint, trick, and strategy” you suggest in your advice since the last inflationary era, what NEW strategies have you devised?

None? There are no more? So I have to choose between eating and shelter? Yay, thanks for nothing.

Yeah, I’m feeling good to walk out of the story with a grocery bill just $30 more than this time last year. And, that’s with cutting down on purchases from the meat department. Hot dogs that were $2 per pack last year or now $3.29 per pack (I have grandchildren who like hotdogs) I’m lucky in that we have a small store near us that has a butcher department and their chicken and pork is about 25% less per pound than at the grocery store chain. I stop there on my way home from the large grocery to pick up my meats.

I’ve been a smart shopper for many years

Stick to the stuff on sale when you can

Buy only the meat on sale and stick an extra one in the freezer

I’ve got enough meat, canned and frozen veggies to last til next summer

Only place I have to go now is DG a mile away

I can’t imagine what it’s like to have to feed a family right now.

My daughter has a friend who owns small local grocery stores in the Sheboygan area. They say their costs are skyrocketing after the 1st. For example, a 32 oz bottle of vegetable oil is increasing (their cost) more than $4.00 per bottle. Every time the dems are running things, this happens. EVERY TIME.

Are they still trying to spin this 6.8% bulls*t?

Guess what? Not all of us learned woke "social justice" math. Some of us learned real math and the inflation rate ain't no paltry 6.8 percent. Let's at least triple that number and we'll be in the ballpark.

Uncle Sugar will up the food stamp checks soon to cover this for the right people.

The rest of us are on our own just as we are with gas prices, housing, vehicles, home energy, and other essentials.

What a travesty. We were doing so well before FauXi unleashed a virus and the media crushed the country.
