I’m sure you’ve seen it all!

Working with young servicemen and their families was rewarding... and eye-opening.

Some of our finest young people simply had no idea how to manage their money. Young sailors with a wife and a kid, and they ate out or ordered out nearly every night, and couldn't figure out why the budget was so tight. For many of them, it was simply how they ate growing up. Pick up the phone and wait for dinner to arrive every night.

Thankfully, in most cases, the solutions were fairly straightforward. Eat at home. If you can't cook, learn to make some easy dishes. It's ridiculously easy to make tacos, for example... cheaper and more nutritious than Taco Bell, and you'll have leftovers the next day. And everyone likes them. On busy weeknights, have a sandwich night... get some sub rolls, some deli-sliced meat and cheese, and eat like a king for several meals... and again... leftovers for the next day. Once a week, venture into cooking something a little more complicated than tacos. You'll learn as you go.

another thing is portion control....If I'm cooking a roast and mashed potatoes I just say "we'll have the rest tomorrow night".....and put the food away....

that way, there is no temptation to take a little extra.....

In February 1995, I was a single mom with 3 daughters. My last semester of engineering school was brutal. I was in school full time, no child support, and waitressing at least 30 hours on weekends (I paid for school and had help with scholarships, not a penny from big gov). Something had to give for those last months. So, I quit my job and went on food stamps. This was before the card. It was really embarrassing.

I was checking out one day, and the guy before me wanted to use his food stamps for dog food. When he was told dog food wasn’t covered, he threw a fit, and said, “I’ll get my dog hamburger”. He went out of line and came back with meat. It was sick. I was on those food stamps until I got a job in June. Exactly what they are supposed to be for. Not a lifestyle or career choice. As a side note, when I went to apply for food stamps, they tried to get me on all the other stuff too. I refused.

Good for you! Did you end up being an Engineer?

Isn’t it funny when we look back on our lives and think back to hard times, and now we’re OK and we still wonder how we managed to survive those days?

Hope I didn’t just jinx us, LOL!

Fantastic! We have always lived remote and have to shop for weeks at a time. So with no stores around the corner it is a way of life. If not we would have to have four refrigerators. So dry goods are just a normal thing. :)

Thanks! Yes, I did! We managed to survive, and we have life skills that, God willing, will see us through this man-made disaster. I tell my teenaged (being raised conservative) grandkids every time the democrats are in control this crap happens. I remember Carter. Sleeping in the car, in the gas station, so we’d be one of the first in line to fill up, told to put a sweater on, our first house interest rate at 19%, don’t hang Christmas lights outside. The democrats are the party of failure.

Sorry to hear that. The deer population in Virginia especially the northern part is ridiculous. Except for the national forest lands of course. The deer know better than to hang around on that land.

I could probably poach one in my yard, but I’m trying to stay legal. Oh well, maybe next fall.

I went into the Army due to Carter’s bumbling. Well, I wasn’t FORCED; my Dad was Navy, so there was SOME competition there, LOL!

No jobs. No $ for college from my folks who had one of those crazy-high mortgages, no gas or gas shortages and lines, crazy prices.

I remember it well!

Counting is one part of the process for sure.

But programming the machines is another which
can be messed with, imo. Every tenth vote for
John Doe goes to Wally Walker....

Yep.

I consider “Dominion” and “Ruby Freeman” to be part of the same communist “Counting Team”.
