Every week there’s a new chart from Digital Entertainment Group of the movies most watched at home, rented on DVD or digital.
This week, “Free Guy” starring Ryan Reynolds, which I watched on a plane this weekend and was very enjoyable, was number 1.
Number 3 was M. Night Shyamalan’s “Old.” Beats me why, I thought it was terrible.
More importantly, number 2 was “Yellowstone, Season 4.” Number 11 is “Yellowstone Season 1.” Number 19 is Season 3.
“Yellowstone” is a TV series, and it’s the only in the top 20. In three spots.
“Yellowstone” is a rare phenom these days. As everyone reported recently, the Season 4 premiere o the Paramount Channel broke records for a cable show with well over 9 million people tuning in. “Yellowstone” did better than almost all broadcast network shows. It performed like “The Walking Dead” in its early, popular seasons.
What does this all mean? First of all, Kevin Costner, thirty years after “Dances with Wolves,” still has his finger on the pulse of the mainstream. He was a Reagan Republican back then, and something he’s doing now is tapping into that again. Of course, this time he’s doing it in partnership with another master storyteller, Taylor Sheridan.
Water cooler shows are hard to come by. But “Yellowstone” has tapped into something out there, and it’s worth paying attention. Is it the soap opera? The Western angle? Are these MAGA people? And if they are, what does that say about the electorate sitting at home. “Yellowstone” is set in Montana and shot in Utah. Not in Beverly Hills or Manhattan or any place urban or Blue. This is something to take notice of if you’re the Democratic party looking at mid term elections.
Stay tuned…

The bus station or the train station?
Regardless of what the dull critics say. Costner’s “The Postman” was a top movie.
My favorite show. I grew up in Wyoming but I also liked Sons of Anarchy and this is kind of a Rocky Mountain version of that.
I’ve watched Yellowstone ( I’m a Costner fan).....
....but it’s dark.....a very dark theme, probably realistic in ‘dog eat dog’ tough Western style
I also love Westerns.....but there is no redeeming influence in this one....
....it’s filled with cutthroat people who hate each other......ruthless
It’s too raw, too vicious.....for me.
And the cursing offends me.
There is rarely a smile or kindness shown.
Guess it’s not my cup of tea.
Guess I’ll stick with reruns of Gunsmoke: )
Why do people watch such crap all the time?
Nothing else to do I guess.
I haven't seen a water cooler in about a year and a half.
I must be one of the few that doesn’t like the show.
“This is something to take notice of if you’re the Democratic party looking at mid term elections. “
Scaring the crap out of the Rats always sounds good to me.
Just curious, what did you think of “Longmire”?
Heartland is way better. Great values and the whole family can watch. Best series ever made in my opinion
I really wanted to start it, so I set all episodes to record when they had one of those from-beginning-to-current marathons on Paramount. Unfortunately, the entire first season was missing, and it’s not one of those series you can pick up at random.
My adoration of Longmire was what led me to consider this series... And moving to Wyoming, but that’s an unrealistic dream for me at this point.
The Paramount show has been hugely popular—so much so that it’s getting a second series inspired by the original. It was just announced that Yellowstone will have a spinoff called 6666 on Paramount+ and oh my goodness, it’s exciting.
According to Entertainment Weekly, this new iteration will surround the Four Sixes ranch in West Texas. You may be wondering: What is the name all about? According to the official logline provided to TVLine,“The 6666 is where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing … The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately where world class cowboys are born and made.”
I liked “The Postman”. Haven’t seen it in a while.
I liked “Waterworld”, too. I know it flopped, but I thought it was good.
I couldn’t get into “Dances With Wolves”.
Yellowstone is good TV, but it also tends towards wokeness with frequent reference to the West being stolen land from the Native Americans.
Yellowstone is red state comfort food?
About 3/4 is regurgitation of lies about white people stealing Indian land.
Of course, there is. John Dutton loves his family and his way of life.
What else would you suggest?
