Sticking to low-fat dairy may not be the only heart healthy option, study shows (highest dairy fat levels had lowest heart risk)
Medical XPress / George Institute for Global Health / PLoS Medicine ^ | Sept. 22, 2021 | Dr. Kathy Trieu Et al.

New research amongst the world's biggest consumers of dairy foods has shown that those with higher intakes of dairy fat—measured by fatty acids in the blood—had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to those with low intakes. Higher intakes of dairy fat were not associated with an increased risk of death.

"Instead, we measured blood levels of certain fatty acids, or fat 'building blocks' that are found in dairy foods, which gives a more objective measure of dairy fat intake that doesn't rely on memory or the quality of food databases," he added.

"We found those with the highest levels actually had the lowest risk of CVD. These relationships are highly interesting, but we need further studies to better understand the full health impact of dairy fats and dairy foods."

An international collaboration assessed dairy fat consumption in 4150 Swedish 60-year-olds by measuring blood levels of a particular fatty acid that is mainly found in dairy foods and therefore can be used to reflect intake of dairy fat.

They were then followed up for an average of 16 years to see how many had heart attacks, strokes and other serious circulatory events, and how many died from any cause during this time.

After statistically adjusting for other known CVD risk factors, the CVD risk was lowest for those with high levels of the fatty acid (reflecting high intake of dairy fats). Those with the highest levels had no increased risk of death from all causes.

"While some dietary guidelines continue to suggest consumers choose low-fat dairy products, others have moved away from that advice, instead suggesting dairy can be part of a healthy diet with an emphasis on selecting certain dairy foods—for example, yoghurt rather than butter—or avoiding sweetened dairy products that are loaded with added sugar," he said.

There are possibly other benefits coming from the dairy products themselves, with the fats serving as a proxy measurements.

This was not tested on lower carb diet followers, but should be effectively the same for them (us).

Another “everyone knows” health advice turns out to be bogus. Another way progressives murder people is through false diet advice.

Sticking to “low fat” diets of any variety are probably not healthy. Ever since “the science” started touting this stuff, people have ballooned into enormous blobs.

“Great news... Guess it’s time for a Haagen-Dazs strawberry milkshake.”

Nothing wrong with the fat in those shakes, but you still want to stay away due to the carb-loading (sugar, in this case).

Reminds me of the oleo vs butter argument. For years .... stay away from butter ... it’s bad for your heart ... use oleo. Now, “Margarine may contain trans fat, which raises LDL (bad) cholesterol, lowers HDL (good) cholesterol and makes blood platelets stickier, increasing heart disease risk.”

What to believe ... What to believe

Fat does not make you fat.

It takes almost as much energy to catabolize fat as you get out of it.

Sugars, on the other hand, yield multiple times more energy than it takes to catabolize them.

Low-fat diets are a superstition.

Gee, I have a weird idea. Eat whole foods as provided by God. Milk, eggs, meat, fruits, veggies, nuts, fish and quit worrying what the doctors and scientists are saying this decade. That will change for next decade anyway. Eat what you want and eventually the “experts” will agree with you, for a short time before they change their mind again.

Low carb, high fat, yet. High carb (meaning high sugar), high or low fat, then no. It’s the carbs that kill, fat is not only fine without carbs, it’s extremely healthy.
