Don’s Pizza King in Belmar has closed after 54 years in business.
The Asbury Park Press reported the beloved pizza place was shuttering following a Sept. 5 Facebook post in which the restaurant cited staffing shortages. It was owned by Don Iglay, known to some locals as “The King.”
“At a minimum, the King needs a break,” the post read. “Like everyone he’s been short-staffed all summer to the point where he is out waiting on people and cooking the pizza!”
Whether the restaurant, located at 811 Main St., would be closed permanently or temporarily was not specified in the Facebook posts. The Iglay family did not return messages seeking comment.
“My dad’s running it and he’s worn out,”

It’s the future side effects people should be worried about. He’s a young man with almost 100% recovery rate from covid.
A Hardee’s closed due to “staffing issues”!? Scary considering the recourses they’d have compared to a single pizzeria.
With regards to passing judgement on the family ... Dad’s heart is not in it anymore after 54 years. Not sure if they live close by or really have what it takes to run this type of business. The difficulty in hiring makes it easier for him to let it go.
I am guessing he did not structure his business to either (1) pass on to the family or (2) sell it to 3rd party and get a lump sum plus stream of income for a number of years into his retirement years. My advice would any reasonably healthy person in 70 - 75 year old age bracket ought to be working to implement options (1) or (2). Else, the business goes away without seeing if more value could be extracted therefrom.
What’s the point of having a family business when the family doesn’t help out?
Time to sell...
Probably against Sharia law if Mohammed didn’t eat pizza.
I think you’re right. It’s just that no matter who runs the restaurant they’ll be facing the same set of economic facts — you can’t find employees in Biden’s economomy.
“Putting unknown substances into the Temple Of The Holy Spirit ... “It ain’t right”, as they say here in TN.“
Do you eat any food from a grocery store?
Lots of unknown substances there unless you are a food scientist.
“Do you eat any food from a grocery store?”
No; I don’t. Never. Ever. Grocery stores are instruments of Satan. I find manna on my lawn every morning, and that works for me.
Funny thing is I have never heard anyone say “Joisey” in my life who actually lives here. Sounds more like a Bowery boys thing. Generally people who live in North Jersey talk like people from NY and those from South Jersey like folks from Philly. Lots of people speak with generic upper middle class American accents and others speak Ebonics (albeit with a West Indian influence in certain urban areas of north Jersey).
I wonder how much he was willing to pay for help. There’s a mentality among a LOT of small business owners that paying workers more than minimum is like being a scab. A beach town often has need for more cheap, low-skilled workers that it has locally; are they willing to pay enough to make it worth while for a kid from Newark to drive out to the beach and back each day? Because less than 30% of 16-to-19-year-old teenagers have jobs in America, today. And less than 40% of people without a high school diploma have jobs.
Gov. Tom Kean used to have ads in the New York metro area, “New Juhysey and you, puhfikt togeddah.” Of course, that was a long, long time ago.
That’s awesome!
Just wait until the local food inspectors find out that you eating food that isn’t inspected !
Dad's kids may be doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers, etc.
Sounds like my brother’s pizza shop. No shows, short money in the register, knives and other tools broken or “lost”, ingredients missing, no shows, free pizzas to friends of employees, high turnover due to quits or terminated employees.
Closed it. He could not be there full time since he was working full time at his primary job.
He made good pizza.
The problem with the “no side effects” is that everyone is different and will react differently to each vaccine.
If the vaccines had undergone decades of testing then the data would be there to show who can safely take the vaccines and who cannot—in fine enough detail that an individual doctor could help individual patients make a reasonable decision.
That data does not exist, so right now any Covid vaccine is a wild shot in the dark—a risk I would never take...I do all my gambling in the casino.
Yeah. Biden will put me in solitary confinement. He’s good at that. 😉
“Have you ever been inside a pizzeria?”
I worked for Domino’s in high school.

They never show that at any restaurant show. “Reality show” my ass. I witness all that you mentioned plus more. He told me once my niece gets graduates college, he’ll sell both his restaurants. Dont forget waking up at 3 in the morning to WAIT for the vegetables and meat deliveries that comes in early in the morning WHEN the prep cook doesnt show with no notice.
Thank your limp wristed Fascist voter friends for their ok of the free cash for freeloaders.
Agree.
Brother and his wife both had full time well paying jobs and decided that they could not run the pizza shop full time to keep it a float without quitting their primary jobs that payed well and had great retirement benefits. The shop was closed and accounts settled. They are happily and comfortably retired now with no regrets and no pizza shop.
