World's biggest wind turbine shows the disproportionate power of scale

The bigger the wind turbine, the better the production and the economics. Hence, they're scaling up to ludicrous proportions.MingYang Smart Energy

==============================================================================

China's MingYang Smart Energy has announced an offshore wind turbine even bigger than GE's monstrous Haliade-X. The MySE 16.0-242 is a 16-megawatt, 242-meter-tall (794-ft) behemoth capable of powering 20,000 homes per unit over a 25-year service life.

The stats on these renewable-energy colossi are getting pretty crazy. When MingYang's new turbine first spins up in prototype form next year, its three 118-m (387-ft) blades will sweep a 46,000-sq-m (495,140-sq-ft) area bigger than six soccer fields.

Every year, each one is expected to generate 80 GWh of electricity. That's 45 percent more than the company's MySE 11.0-203, from just a 19 percent increase in diameter. No wonder these things keep getting bigger; the bigger they get, the better they seem to work, and the fewer expensive installation projects need to be undertaken to develop the same capacity.

The overall result should be a drop in offshore wind energy production prices – a sorely needed drop, too. Current levelized costs of energy, as estimated by the US Energy Information Administration for new energy generation assets going live in 2026, place offshore wind as the most expensive way of generating a megawatt-hour right now, at US$120.52, where ultra-supercritical coal is more like $72.78 and standalone solar is around $32.78 before subsidies.

Obviously, wind fills in gaps that solar can't, and it'll be a crucial part of the energy mix going forward. Scaling the industry up with these mammoth turbines is the key reason why industry experts are predicting that the cost of offshore wind will drop by between 37 and 49 percent by 2050, as reported by Renew Economy.

MingYang says the MySE 16.0-242 is just the start of its "new 15MW+ offshore product platform," and that it's capable of operating installed to the sea floor or on a floating base. The full prototype will be built in 2022, installed and into operation by 2023. Commercial production is slated to begin in the first half of 2024.

If they divert some of the generated power to microwave beams, they can cook the endangered birds right after they die by getting hit by the spinning blade.

Boy howdy, now I sure do feel good about the environment with this clean energy mess.

Just like EVs, people believe they are more environmentally friendly, and EVs don't use gas! No, you have a coal burner that destroys the planet with your lithium and cobalt mines. And then there's the used battery dilemma and the cost/impact with recycling/discarding batteries.

And don't get me started on ethanol and the colossal pollution and waste.

But as other FReepers have pointed out, this is always about feeling heroic and |doing something”, even if there is no basis in reality.

Just dump them in the ocean.

Why no concern for what these do to change the climate? Pulling all that energy out of wind patterns has to do something to the climate.

“I wonder what the speed at the point of the blade can reach?”

I believe the max limit on turbine size and speed is that if they get much larger than this the tips of the blades go faster than the speed of sound.

The writing on the top photo looks like it starts out with BR 549 but I can’t make out the rest.

I wonder if these turbines are examples of Tofu-dreg construction

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tofu-dreg_project
“Tofu-dreg project” (Chinese: 豆腐渣工程; pinyin: dòufuzhā gōngchéng) is a phrase used in Mainland China to describe a poorly constructed building. This phrase was coined by Zhu Rongji, the former premier of the People’s Republic of China, on a visit to Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province to describe a poorly-built dam. In China, the term tofu dregs (the pieces left over after making tofu) is widely used a…”

All it takes to build and install it is the power from 40,000. homes.

West Texas A&M University/UL Tallest Wind Turbine

West Texas A&M in Canyon TX does the UL testing for wind turbines. This video shows the construction of a huge wind turbine southeast of Amarillo.

I suspect that these turbines will continue to get bigger - just the economies of scale.

I understand that this wind turbine is a prototype that will be sold in Brazil and other countries with a lot of shoreline.

They are leading in 4-5 of the disciplines that make a country a superpower.

Many do not know...because they do not want to know.

We are past the tipping point, except in some military technologies. 7-10 more years, at best.

““Wind a solar is a commie plot to make electricity expensive and scarce.” What an idiotic statement.“.

Sorry if the truth triggers you. Texas has more wind power than any other state and its a colossal failure as well as an environmental disaster. Oh, and theres that little issue of more than one hundred people who froze to death here last winter because of wind and solar. Texas has generated a surplus of electricity in the 40 plus years I’ve lived here until the commies pushed wind and solar, now we have power outages with only a mild heat wave. The proof is in the pudding, so get over it.

Sorry, but wind power affects the environment as well. It’s not free.

No silly, they will just drop them to the bottom of the sea floor and claim they are creating manmade reefs for fish habit and scuba diving experiences.

China makes up a lot of sh*t. Go to youtube and view their ghost cities. Total flim flam to convince gullible westerners that they are significant.

"Big wind and big sun fail when needed most."

As known and intended by those behind the scam, yet so many snowflakes fall for it. In Texas the maintenance and infrastructure of the grid is paid for only by traditional electric generation companies. IE, coal, nuclear and natural gas is who pays for the grid. Wind and solar are exempt because they are not economically viable without subsidies and exemptions. Wind and solar stop producing when the sun is not shinning and the wind is not blowing which happens far more often than people realize.

I just got back from Sedona AZ. Drive through west Texas, New Mexico and into AZ and see the miles and miles and endless acres of beautiful landscape soiled by thousands of these turbine monstrosities. You will also inevitably drive by many enormous trucks hauling 80 foot long replacement blades that last only ten years before needing to be replaced again. Thousands of these gigantic blades have to be buried when they are at the end of their life because they are toxic and cannot be recycled. Is this green? No it's not, it's and outright crime.

It has been long known the communist party infiltrated and took over the enviromental movement many years ago. Wind and solar are just one of the disastrous results of their evil schemes. The commie plot is to take things that common people need on a daily basis and make them scarce and expensive. By doing this it consumes the average persons disposable income thereby preventing the accumulation of wealth. In a nutshell, wind and solar are intentionally designed to keep people poor so they can be easily controlled.

Rant off.

How much energy does it produce when the wind does not blow?
How much per mph?
Meanwhile a coal, nuclear, gas power plant is 100% producing energy.
