============================================================================
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - One of the founding members of the band Kansas has passed away.
According to a post on Facebook, violinist/vocalist Robby Steinhardt died Saturday, July 17, 2021, at Tampa General Hospital.
Steinhardt’s wife Cindy posted the following to her Facebook page:
“Our final journey started May 13 when Robby was admitted into the hospital with acute pancreatitis. Later that night he went into acute septic shock and was placed on life support. Outlook was very grave as he wasn’t expected to live through the night.
Like the true fighter he is, he managed to spring back much to the amazement of his entire medical staff. Once again he cheated death and the road to recovery had begun.
65 days later, on the day he was to be released from medical care and move to the rehabilitation center to build his strength, his body had other plans. A fever set in, blood pressure became uncontrollable, the sepsis reared it's ugly head again.
The medical staff at Tampa General stabilized him, he greeted me with a smile, open arms and kisses.
His daughter Becky called. They had a beautiful, happy, conversation together.
6 minutes later as I held him to keep him warm, he died in my arms at 6:30pm Saturday July 17, 2021.
We are beyond devastated as our lives were about to start a new adventure. Robby just recorded his first solo album with the talented music producer Michael Franklin at Solar Studios. A tour to start in August, Robby was so looking forward to being back on stage doing what he loved.
I’ve always tried to share our lives with you but I ask you to please respect this heavy time of grief. I encourage you to share your stories and pictures of Robby on his page.
My only regret is that I can’t share them with him to show him how much he is loved.
Hug your loved ones, be happy, stay safe and be well.”
Cindy Steinhardt, Robby's wife via Facebook According to Robby’s bio, Steinhardt was a member of Kansas from 1973 to 1982, and from 1997-2006.
He was 71 years old.
Steinhardt last performed in Topeka as a member of Kansas in July 2016. Steinhardt and fellow band member Kerry Livgren stopped in Topeka’s NOTO Arts District prior to the show for a fundraiser -- read more about their visit here.
Indeed. RIP.
Now I know why.
During the late 1970s - Kansas was a top band and a national headliner act.

Rehab center. Nursing home where sepsis dwells. He should have just went home.
RIP Robby.
Carry on, my wayward son
There’ll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don’t you cry no more
Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
Now your life’s no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you
Whenever I hear a lot of one band that is ‘old’ music (to my children at least) it is typically because they are having a concert locally, one of their songs was featured in a movie, or one of their band member passed on. As time goes on it is more often the last reason.
I’ve been hearing a lot of Cheap Trick lately, but haven’t learned why yet.
Sad. My dad passed at 71 too. Way too young.
Brings back a lot of good memories thinking about their music.
RIP.
It’s tough getting older, and getting old.
One of the best concerts I ever went to was in about 1976 -— Kansas was the main ticket and the warm up, a group of unknowns (at that time) Cheap Trick. Great memories!
I was in a band in the late 1970s that covered “Carry On.”
We used it to open the second set, and it served as a sort of litmus test - if we hit the a cappella three-part entrance, it was probably going to be a good set.
I saw them in 81 at a “Day on the Green” in Oakland.
Reo Speedwagon
Kansas
UFO
38 Special
Gamma (Ronnie Montrose)
I saw them again in a small venue in 2016 and they still put on a great show, for a bunch of geezers!
From Song for America:
“Incomudro - Hymn To The Atman”
Run a silent path to nowhere, everything is all
You could have a pleasant life if Summer had no Fall
Treat yourself so gently though the task is often hard
Man is not a God it seems, who holds the final card
Close your eyes and feel the darkness, speak and hear the sound,
We only catch a glimpse of all the life that is around,
The man is not alive who knows the value of his soul,
And when our lives are pulled away, there’s more to fill the hole
I wonder what you’d think if all the changes didn’t come,
For growing old is only going back to where you’re from
Far beyond our senseless thoughts there lies a core of gold
Where essence of the newborn child is waiting in the old,
The Master Plan is well conceived, it’s there for all to see
And each day that is spent in thought is living harmony
Reach into the depths of being, pass beyond the years,
Time is lost in stillness, where there are no hopes and fears,
Linger in the void, and like a beacon in the night
Purity will fill your soul with ever-present light
Everything you’ve seen is waiting patiently within
For growing old is only going back to where you’ve been
The downside is that now all I can hear is the middle part that I sang...
Nobody’s Home
A favorite song of mine, I play violin and viola and guitar.
Kansas is a favorite of mine.
It’s sad he died, he left the band 2007?
