Urban Etiquette: Is it a faux pas to ignore a knock at the door?
The Toronto Star ^ | June 23, 2018 | Ellen Vanstone

Dear Ellen,

Is it rude not to answer the door when you’re not expecting anyone? — Home Body

Dear Home Body,

...

As for strangers showing up at your door unannounced, you are absolutely under no obligation to answer. The only exception is if you live in a remote location and they need help. Even then, you might want to call a neighbour or 911 rather than fling open the door to potential thieves or post-apocalyptic zombies. Remember, it’s always better to risk being rude than risk being beaten, or eaten.

Unless I’m expecting a visitor, I always ignore knocks at the door.

That won’t change for Biden’s Gestapo.

But how do you know if you know them without answering the door?

It's a self-correcting situation.

Good friends or neighbors call ahead of time nowadays.

It's the busybodies who want the element of surprise.

The only fly-in-the-ointment is if the busybody calls your cell while you're ignoring the doorbell ("Hi Bob it's Floyd, I saw your car in the driveway but nobody is answering the door and I was worried that maybe you're choking or having a heart attack becsuse I said to myself 'now why won't they answer the door when I'm ringing the bell I mean isn't that rude?' ") in your knickers while eating chips and watching "Battlebots." The same principle applies....there is no law requiring you to answer the phone.

The tops of their heads reveals their identity?

I can’t believe anyone is even questioning this concept. Of course you do not have to no matter who it is. They have to get a warrant to make you open the door period, no matter who it is or what agency it is.

You have every right to tell them to take a hike and remove themselves from your property. You have a right to have them charged with trespass if they do not leave your property. Call the cops and have them forcibly removed.

Plus it’s a payday for the canvassers, i.e., government goons.

I prefer a “NO DRUG PUSHERS!” sign to the “No Trespassing” sign.

The cameras are wide angle enough to reveal almost their entire bodies.

We learned that rule that you don’t have to open the door in 1983. We bought our first house as a married couple. “Jerry,” the old widower next door liked to drop by, but he was always drunk as a skunk, always hinting he’d like to come in and yak, and impossible to get rid of. We humored him the first few times, but kept him outside the screen door. After that we learned to hide.

It’s always xenophobic and sometimes rassis.

But my buddy says if you ask pervy questions about their underwear they will go away. At least the Mormons will.

For the past 20+ years I have opened the door to NO ONE except:

1. Those I know.
2. Those who I assume have a legitimate purpose.

The same goes for answering my phone.

If they cannot leave a message/note, the problem is theirs, NOT mine.

Your door is part of perimiter security. Don’t compromise it without good reason.

But how do you know if you know them without answering the door?

Not a single person I know shows up unannounced at my home, and I never show up at someone elses' home unannounced either.

Therefore, anyone knocking on my door is someone I don't know, or someone IDGAF about.

If I answer the door, chances are very high the unannounced (presumably jack-booted government thug) is going to run from my property screaming for their life.

After all this burn-loot-murder b.s. along with the antifa-pantywaste's and eff the po-po b.s. the past few summers, I don't answer my door to an unannounced visitor unarmed. Anyone who does so is a fool taking a chance with their life.

I would encourage a more passive aggressive response.

Simply do not answer or respond.

I’ve had police pound on my door in NYC during the Dinkins Admin when they were facilitating a pogrom against Jews in Crown Heights (seriously). The Rabbi just looked up and said “if they have a warrant, they’ll come in. If they don’t, they will go away.”

Indeed...

you hear a knock at the door. You peek through the window: it’s the cops, and they’re asking you to let them in. You have a right to say no or not say anything if the police ask to come inside of your home or ask to search your home without a search warrant. You are under no obligation to speak to the police or open the door. It is not a crime to keep the door closed.

If I don't have to answer the door if it's the police, I sure as shinola don't have to do it for some AOC-in-training. As Christopher Walken advises us...
