Urban Etiquette: Is it a faux pas to ignore a knock at the door?
The Toronto Star ^ | June 23, 2018 | Ellen Vanstone

Dear Ellen,

Is it rude not to answer the door when you’re not expecting anyone? — Home Body

Dear Home Body,

...

As for strangers showing up at your door unannounced, you are absolutely under no obligation to answer. The only exception is if you live in a remote location and they need help. Even then, you might want to call a neighbour or 911 rather than fling open the door to potential thieves or post-apocalyptic zombies. Remember, it’s always better to risk being rude than risk being beaten, or eaten.

Even a leftist knows people who want to get the shot, got the shot, and the "NO" folks think this canvassing is borderline illegal.

Thus, the intent isn't about vaccinations....it's about taking advantage of a crisis. I have two possible TRUE intentions behind this effort

1. Facilitating the shooting/killing of a canvasser by a "gun nut." THEN, Jill and Sleepy will do a press conference, with anger and crocodile tears, announcing a push for harsh gun control.

2. A boots-on-the-ground intelligence gathering effort. They EXPECT conservatives to get in the canvassers faces or ask about their vaxx status and quote HIPPA etc. Then, they can build a home-by-home map of where to go during the next riot.

Resist the urge to surrender your 4th Amendment guarantees. There is noting to be gained by answering the door to these zealots. It is best to let these pests knock, and ignore them.

You skew to the “moderate”, even lefty Republican thought.

However, on this, you are right.

Ignoring a knock at the door has never been a faux pas in my book. I can ignore a phone call. I can definitely ignore a knock at the door. Even if the guy knocking knows I am home.I have done so on numerous occasions.

It is my honn m e. I have zero obligation to people calling or ringing the doorbell. Zero.

Well stated.

Nobody has any obligation to open the door for anybody knocking.

For anybody who continues to linger and demand the door be opened is at that point criminal trespass.

Answering the Door (good advice for the vaccination canvassers at your door)

Answering the Door:

Don’t open your door at the sound or a knock or bell. Know who’s at your door before opening it. Install a wide-angle peephole in your front door so you can look out without being seen yourself.
Don’t rely on chain locks for security. They’re only good for privacy.
Don’t open the door to a delivery or service person unless you are expecting a package or a call.

Ask for the person’s name and the name and phone number of the company. Call it to confirm the visit. Keep the door closed and locked in the meantime.
Check photo registration card before dealing with any solicitors, peddlers, interviewers, etc.

These persons are required to obtain a card from the SDPD and display it on the front of their clothing. They are allowed to solicit only between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. except by appointment. Call their agency to verify their identity.

Call the SDPD if a solicitor does not have a registration card. Use the non-emergency numbers, 619-531-2000 or 858-484-3154. And provide the dispatcher with a good description of the person.

Post a NO SOLICITING sign if you don’t want any solicitor to ring your door bell, knock on your door, or make any other sound to attract your attention.

Ask for photo identification before letting in anyone you don’t know. Check out the identification with the company or agency if you are suspicious.

Never let a stranger enter your home to use the telephone. Offer to make the call yourself in an emergency.

Consider getting a dog that will bark when someone is at the door.

Call 911 if the person at the door is aggressive in knocking or ringing the doorbell, or is otherwise threatening.

If you don’t want to answer the door and don’t want the person there to think that no one is home, say something like “We can’t come to the door now,” or “We don’t open the door to strangers.”

I have had decades of practice with census takers who want more than the Constitutional minimum.

Answer the bell, hand them some Trump material and then close the door.

Ask for photo identification before letting in anyone you don’t know.

But we all know those photo ids are so racist.....

But how do you know if you know them without answering the door?

This was always my dilemma, so recently I bought a Blink outdoor camera and screwed it under my eaves, pointing toward the front door and my driveway. When someone rings the bell, I hit a button in the Blink app on my phone and immediately see who it is. It was surprisingly easy to set up.
