Boeing's 737 Max aircraft under scrutiny AGAIN
BBC ^ | May 2021 | Theo Leggett

Little more than six months after Boeing's 737 Max was cleared to fly again by US regulators, the aircraft finds itself under intense scrutiny once again.

The discovery of a potential electrical problem last month led to the renewed grounding of more than 100 aeroplanes, belonging to 24 airlines around the world.

Deliveries of many more new aircraft have been suspended. Boeing and the US regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration say they are working closely to address the issue.

But the affair has given new energy to critics who claim the 737 Max was allowed back into service prematurely - and that issues which could have contributed to two fatal crashes have not been fully analysed or addressed.

Those critics include a high profile whistle-blower, Ed Pierson, who has already sought to link allegedly poor production standards at the 737 factory with electrical defects on the crashed planes, which he claims may have been implicated in both accidents.

Ping. Would you feel safe traveling on one of these?!

Makes you think of the good old days when 737’s dropped out of the Skies because of a faulty Rudder Actuator.

It also took it happening two time before they figured out the problem.

Coincidence, you be the judge.

I flew on a 737 Max back in 2019 on a flight from DFW to TPA. It was a nice experience overall. This was all before the first set of issues.

AFAIK - of the 2 crashes of 737-max both were attributed to the automated nose down control.

The other issue, exploding engine, was a design defect from rolls Royce and not a Boeing issue per se. (and didn’t cause a crash)

The electrical problem has NOT caused a crash (and stuff like that in new designs isn’t uncommon)

I’m sure the dem snowflakes don’t care too much about those “allegedly poor production standards at the 737 factory”. For those Marxist babies the important thing is how much diversity that they have on the production line.

Eh. The Earth is over-populated anyhow. It’s worth the sacrifice of a few thousand air travelers to ensure that every 80 IQ poc gets a living wage.

A few years ago Boeing management decided they were too beholden to their engineers and should focus on finances.

To do this they moved their headquarters from the production facilities in Washington to be near the banks and lawyers in Chicago.

That seems to have been one of the worst business decisions of the century.

Apparently the MCAS system was installed because the Max designed required the engines to be moved forward on the wing which in turn caused potential stalls from pointing the nose up to much when lifting off. (or something like that)

Boeing installed the MCAS but didn’t make any reference to it in the pilot manuals or training. Some kind of cost saving thing.

I be3lieve they outsourced the hardware and software of the pressure sensing pitot tube, to Indian companies in a cost-cutting move. In addition, the foreign pilots who crashed do not have the experience needed to counter the software glitch.

FR will now overreact to a month old story about a minor problem.

I flew on one for the first time about a month ago. It was a nice, comfortable, and quiet ride.

Southwest equipped their 737 Maxes with colored LED lights in the cabin. The cabin kept cycling through red, purple, blue, orange and white light. It was ULTRA-annoying. I can’t imagine why anybody would think that would be pleasant or relaxing. It was like some little kid ordered the multi-color LED lighting option and some little kid in the e-suite ordered the flight attendants to change cabin colors all the time.

It reminded me of the early days of WYSIWYG “desktop publishing” when people put every font imaginable into a document. Just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you SHOULD do it.

As long as the planes stay in the air, it’s a minor complaint.

They just used blue for the overhead hue. It was very nice.

Correct! Almost 21 years at Boeing, I gave up on them and left, I could walk down the street and knock on the door of “Mahogany row”, as could any employee. When they made the move, the Company became isolated from the Corporation HQ.
Bad decision. Bean counters don’t make the world’s best aircraft.

Boeing redesigned the 737 instead of designing a new airplane from the ground up. They moved the larger-nacelle engines forward and up in front of the wings which shifted the center of gravity in relation to the center of lift. Such instability was only correctable with computer controls.

While an inherently unstable aircraft may be acceptable for an F-117 or a B-2, for a regular civilian airline it's a questionable risk.

I’m just curious how much Airbus has to pay the BBC to plant this anti-Boeing nonsense.

Once you have a bunch of idiots designing and building your air planes then things can obviously get really bad. Just another sign of our times. The only thing anyone really cares about is the money. The entire design of the MCAS system was proof of ignorance and carelessness at the highest level. And I believe there are still issues with it that have not been fixed. like the fact that it cannot be disengaged without also killing electric yoke control as the “STAB” switches actually disconnect power to the electric motors.
