Study: Low fat diets reduce men’s testosterone levels

A new study conducted at the University of Worcester and published in The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, has found low fat diets decrease men’s testosterone levels by 10-15%.

Optimal testosterone levels are critical to men’s health. Low testosterone levels are linked to a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. Healthy testosterone levels are also key for men’s athletic performance, mental health, and sexual health.

Since the 1970s, there has been a decrease in men’s average testosterone levels and rates of hypogonadism (medically low testosterone) have been increasing. Low risk dietary strategies could be a useful treatment for low testosterone.

The study was a systematic review and meta-analysis, which combined together the results of 6 well-controlled studies with a total of 206 participants. These studies first put men on a high fat diet (40% fat), and then transferred them to a low fat diet (20% fat), and found their testosterone levels decreased by 10-15% on average. Particularly bad were vegetarian low fat diets causing decreases in testosterone up to 26%.

They have mushrooms under "vegetables." Mushrooms are fungi.

Where do peanuts fit? They are legumes.

I read the body’s preferred fuel IS carbs. everyone trying to eat low carb, keto etc may likely cause themselves problems down the road. too much protein can be bad for some body’s. too much dairy is inflammatory to the body as well.

If any one follows the bible, it clearly talks of eating bread in more than one place. I don’t think God’s word was wrong then nor now.

LCHF/Keto/diets of any kind in recent decades has become religion to the masses just like mask wearing etc of covid 19 religion/cultism of this last year.

Plenty of sleep and exercise will make much more of a testosterone difference than picky food choices preferred over a common variety of foods. You’re not going to eat your way to good health while sitting in houses and riding in cars.

Yes, I could replace my myriad supplement stack just by going on TRT.

My problem with keto is that ketosis is burning fat for energy instead of carbs and I’m skinny and have never been able to gain weight. I have no fat to burn.

Thanks for your good posting #14. I’m strongly into the top list and hardly any of the 2nd list. Like you, my carbs mainly come from my beer!

A good friend swears the reason he has all sons and no daughters is due to his high-fat diet when he was in his twenties.
***********************************************
Might be some truth there. ....I was born 9 months after Pearl Harbor in Dallas. In ‘43, folks bought a new house in WSW portion of Dallas and, with GM who lived with us, set about putting in a large Victory Garden.

I grew up helping in the garden, which had numerous fruit trees, berries, beans, turnips, carrots, tomatoes, etc. Our meals always had lots of vegetables and a little meat/poultry.

At 18 I went on active duty in the Navy and fell in love with the chow that provided LOTS of meat at each meal. I was flight deck crew (catapults), so got front of the line privileges 24 hours/day.

Married at age 20 and daughter was born early ‘64. Vasectomy in ‘74 and Dr. said I had very low sperm count. That perhaps explains why no other kids and is possibly the result of eating mostly from that Victory Garden the first 18 years of my life.

"Yes, I could replace my myriad supplement stack just by going on TRT."

I've researched the various Male Enhancement products over time. Some can work depending on age and the ingredients; others are ripoffs. If you're in your 50's and over, the best is bio-identical TRT - not steroids that body-builders use.

A painless shot in the hip every week or two weeks not only gives you the vitality of a young man and definitely enhances your libido. Testosterone is the main reason young men have few heart problems or strokes, with the few genetic exceptions. And yes, exercise is important, and T gives you the energy to do so.

Just research hormone replacement therapy and you'll probably find someone close by. It's not expensive and can change your life. I've been using it since my late 50's when it was obvious my energy and libido were slowing down. BTW, there have been no studies that say side effects or other health problems. Although, you may get some zits occasionally.

However, those with prostrate cancer should NOT take T. Also, if you decide to go TRT, you should also be taking Saw Palmetto which is the healthiest supplement for your prostrate. I've been taking it for years and my tests always show normal even with my TRT. Good luck, sir.

Yes, meat with unsaturated fats is what men need for testosterone. That's what body builders eat. If you prefer no red meat, salmon, tuna, chicken, turkey are the next best thing. Never eat tofu, unless you want to grow nipples...ha. It has lots of estrogen in it.

Is it any wonder vegan and vegetarian men always look so sickly or frail? They are denying their body of meat and fats.

From what I understand about Keto, it is similar to Atkins except for more fat. Atkins' low carb diet works! My wife has tried every diet out there. When she used the Atkins program, the pounds dropped off every week while giving her more energy. The Nutri-System program of eating 5-6 times a day to ramp up the metabolism seems to work. However, it's expensive and really inconvenient to spend so much time eating at certain intervals. She quit it.

The problem is most women crave carbs and not the low index veggies. They seem to need bread and pasta which are high index and convert almost immediately to fat cells. Even fats don't go to fat cells as quickly.

I found that soy wasn’t doing any good for this old gal, either. I avoid it, now.
