Study: Low fat diets reduce men’s testosterone levels

A new study conducted at the University of Worcester and published in The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, has found low fat diets decrease men’s testosterone levels by 10-15%.
Optimal testosterone levels are critical to men’s health. Low testosterone levels are linked to a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. Healthy testosterone levels are also key for men’s athletic performance, mental health, and sexual health.
Since the 1970s, there has been a decrease in men’s average testosterone levels and rates of hypogonadism (medically low testosterone) have been increasing. Low risk dietary strategies could be a useful treatment for low testosterone.
The study was a systematic review and meta-analysis, which combined together the results of 6 well-controlled studies with a total of 206 participants. These studies first put men on a high fat diet (40% fat), and then transferred them to a low fat diet (20% fat), and found their testosterone levels decreased by 10-15% on average. Particularly bad were vegetarian low fat diets causing decreases in testosterone up to 26%.

Traditionally, dietary guidelines have focused on limiting fat intake, with the current UK and US guidelines limiting fat intake to less than 35% of total calories. However, as more research on the benefits of high fat, low carbohydrate diets is done, this traditional view is coming under increasing scrutiny. In recent years, high fat diets have been shown to decrease triglycerides, decrease blood pressure, increase HDL cholesterol (aka ‘good cholesterol’), and now with this latest research: increase testosterone levels. Hunter gatherer type of diet is good for you.

Any type of LCHF diet emphasizes foods that are high in fat and low in carbohydrates.

- Condiments: Fresh herbs, pepper, spices, etc.
Adding non-starchy vegetables to most meals and snacks can boost antioxidant and fiber intake, all while adding color and crunch to your plate.
Focusing on whole, fresh ingredients, trying new recipes and planning meals ahead of time can help you stay on track and prevent boredom.
Foods to Avoid
When following an LCHF diet, it’s important to reduce your intake of foods high in carbs.
Here is a list of items that should be limited:
- Grains and starches: Breads, baked goods, rice, pasta, cereals, etc.
- Sugary drinks: Soda, juice, sweet tea, smoothies, sports drinks, chocolate milk, etc.
- Sweeteners: Sugar, honey, agave, maple syrup, etc.
- Starchy vegetables: Potatoes, sweet potatoes, winter squash, beets, peas, etc.
- Fruits: Fruits should be limited, but consuming small portions of berries is encouraged.
- Alcoholic beverages: Beer, sugary mixed cocktails and wine are high in carbohydrates.
- Low-fat and diet items: Items labeled “diet,” “low-fat” or “light” are often high in sugar.
- Highly processed foods: Limiting packaged foods and increasing whole, unprocessed foods is encouraged.
Although the above foods should be reduced in any LCHF diet, the number of carbs consumed per day varies depending on the type of diet you are following.
For example, a person following a ketogenic diet must be stricter in eliminating carb sources in order to reach ketosis, while someone following a more moderate LCHF diet will have more freedom with their carbohydrate choices.

From what I understand, cholesterol is the mother hormone that our body breaks down into DHEA, Testosterone, Estradiol in differing amounts according to our XX or XY.

Maybe. But your body stops producing DHEA naturally in your 30’s, so it’s the best basic supplement for boosting test.

Yes, DHEA is a good supplement for mature men. However, if you’re in 50’s or older, the best way to maintain/renew younger T levels is through bio-identical shots every couple weeks. I’m 71 and they make me feel 20 years younger. Plus, I get my hormone panel done every year.

Not surprised it lowers testosterone. The fewer prey about, the fewer predators needed.
A good friend swears the reason he has all sons and no daughters is due to his high-fat diet when he was in his twenties.
