He infamously quit the music industry at the height of his stardom after becoming burnt out trying to shed his boy next door pop persona.
But almost 20 years later, Rick Astley has made a comeback on TikTok - and is already seeing success with the younger generation.
Speaking on Channel Nine's Today on Friday, the 55-year-old said it was 'kind of nuts' to think that his iconic track, Never Gonna Give You Up, was still a big hit.

He had a soulful, deep voice at age 19. Too bad his singing career didn't last very long.
Been Rick Rolling since the 1990’s.
exactly....hence the term...you’ve been Rick Rolled...LOL
I remember seeing one of Rick’s videos on MTV - don’t remember which one - and thinking, “There’s NO way that voice is coming from that guy!”
I have to admit I had second thoughts about clicking on this link . . .
You saw his video on MTV? Wow that’s a long time ago. What a concept, music videos on Music Television. For whatever reason, they abandoned videos for reality shows.
I love it when Joe Pags “Rickrolls” a caller on his radio show.
He’s worth about $20 million, because of that one song. He’s not doing badly.

I even had a button that said ‘I want my MTV’. Every guy then was in love with Martha Quinn.

I have Rick Rolled posters on freerepublic before. They did not find it amusing. I was going to do it with this post but it’s really not possible anymore because YouTube starts every video with advertisements now so all the fun would be lost before the video even starts.
If you had never seen Rick Astley you could be forgiven for thinking you were listening to a 40 year-old black guy.
ah yes, Martha Quinn. I liked her. Sometimes she was referred to as the “mighty Quinn”, as a nod to a song by that name.
Yep, it seems like a lifetime ago, when there were music videos on MTV, and the “Vee Jays”, video jockeys, similar to disc jockeys on radio stations, played the big hit songs.
You and everyone else. That video destroyed him because people thought he'd look like Isaac Hayes or something and they saw this sort of nerdy looking skinny white kid instead. Cognitive dissonance! His huge song tanked rapidly and he never had another one. Then he became a joke in the early 2000s with the Rick-Rolled gimmick where people trick you into clicking a link only to be taken to video or Rick Astley singing that song.
But over the last few years he's been getting a second chance to actually be heard as more than a meme. He has a youtube channel with 2 million subscribers and I've watched some of his stuff. Not bad. Here's one with 3.7M views:
He has a YouTube channel that has some decent songs on it. Yeah, I’ve subscribed to it.
That was back in the day when MTV was actually entertaining.
And she yearned for David Lee Roth!
