You saw his video on MTV? Wow that’s a long time ago. What a concept, music videos on Music Television. For whatever reason, they abandoned videos for reality shows.

You and everyone else. That video destroyed him because people thought he'd look like Isaac Hayes or something and they saw this sort of nerdy looking skinny white kid instead. Cognitive dissonance! His huge song tanked rapidly and he never had another one. Then he became a joke in the early 2000s with the Rick-Rolled gimmick where people trick you into clicking a link only to be taken to video or Rick Astley singing that song.

But over the last few years he's been getting a second chance to actually be heard as more than a meme. He has a youtube channel with 2 million subscribers and I've watched some of his stuff. Not bad. Here's one with 3.7M views:
