Long before Tesla built its Roadster, a classic British brand was best known for tiny drop-top sports cars. That'd be MG. Though it's under Chinese ownership these days, MG hinted it wants to return to the days of the roadster and revealed the first photos of the Cyberster on Thursday. It's a bad name, yes, but a good looking car.
The car gives off some seriously retro vibes up front with round headlights like the MGs of yore. The company calls them "Magic Eye" headlights since they're not always on. Only when the driver wants them do they flip on to reveal the light. I get serious Jaguar XJ220 vibes here, and I love it.
Flowing from the side profile, we're met with an edgy rear end in contrast to the front. The back end boasts curved hips, but a long light bar squares the shape off, running from the bottom of the diffusor and across. As a nod to MG's heritage, Union Jack taillights fill out the rear. It's neat, but it's not the first time an automaker decided to include such a detail; Mini's been doing it for years now.
The sole interior shot teases seriously futuristic elements that would likely never fly for a production car, but it's a fun concept. A steering yoke sits ahead of the driver with a digital cluster and it looks like the Cyberster concept includes a palm scanner for security.
As for power, MG didn't speak to those figures yet, but it said the electric powertrain is good for 500 miles of range. That's not an EPA figure, mind you. Nevertheless, MG's out to make a statement.
Maybe MG will put the Cyberster into production. We'll learn a lot more at the car's debut towards the end of April,

My very 1st car was a red 67 MG, what a POS, But I had a lot of fun in that POS
A free bottle of wire smoke with every purchase.

I am an R&D electronics engineering tech by trade and Lucas was frustrating as hell!
I bet it burns faster than a Tesla!
My sister’s first car was a gorgeous forest green model. Alas, it was nothing but headaches and rarely ran. But it sure looked swell sitting there in the driveway.
First car with a 500 mile power train warranty.
This new MG concept is damned nice looking car. But I’m not buying a vehicle from the ChiComs. No way, no how.
I loved British racing green
My very first car was a British Racing Green 1959 MGA Fixed Head (Brit for Coupe). It was 5 years old when I bought it. It was simply the worst car I ever owned with regard to reliability and comfort, but it was so cool looking and so much FUN that I’ve recently been looking to replace it. Wish I had kept in the garage. Good examples are in the $20+K range today.
(Yes, I am that old.)
funny since there is no power train...
That makes it a no go for me after what the CCP did w/ the Virus. Folks, they want to own the EV Revolution and supplant us. Ditto that in this Ev-VTOL (manned carrying drone) marketspace. Will Xi-O'Biden sell out MI, OH, & IN w/ cheap Chicom EV's....
I had a '66 MGB for a while, with all the options: pinstripe leather interior, Seat belts, AM radio, heater and ashtray! The heater generated just enough output that on cold days, you could choose between a marginally lukewarm interior or defrosted windshield. It was a labor of love to keep it running, maintaining the dual SU carbs, dealing with cold rain that found its way through the top and dripped down the back of your neck, etc.
But on a nice day, or a clear, warm night, there was nothing better than dropping the top, feeling the breeze in the hair that I had back then, playing curves on backroads, or hitting the interstate with a bowl of stars overhead and seeing from horizon to horizon. All the work, money and heartache poured into that car was somehow worth it.
I don't think this new "cyberster," is going to have that same romantic appeal unless they somehow find a way to make it drip oil on the driveway.
I used to know a guy that had an MG. He’d replaced the entire drive train with a supper up GM iron Duke 4 cylinder engine and GM 4 speed. He used a narrowed Vega rear end. With headers, cam and after market pistons, and intake he had about 145 horse power. He had to stiffen the front suspension because the engine was heavier.
It was fun to drive!
Sweet! I wish I could post a pic of mine, but unfortunately I sold it WAY before the advent of digital photography! Lol!
In 1970 at age 22, my wife and I bought a roadster. We were in the show room and there was another couple looking at the floor model. That ol’ guy turned to me and asked if we had kids yet an I told him, “No.” He said, “I’m 64, if you don’t buy this, you will be my age before you get one.”
That settled it. We bought a new mid-engine Porsche 914 for the outlandish price of $3987.00 that afternoon.
Worst name ever. I’m sure Chinese marketers came up with that.
