It has stood for over nine centuries as the most celebrated record of the 1066 Norman Conquest of England, its famous images cemented into the mind of every British school child.
But for all its enduring power, the 70-metre (230 feet) long Bayeux Tapestry -- held at a museum in the northern French town of the same name -- is a fragile object suffering from wear-and-tear, including thousands of holes.
It will now be restored for the first since 1870, two years after an agreement between Paris and London for the tapestry to be loaned to Britain. "The tapestry is an old lady who is nearly 1,000 years old, a very, very fine linen canvas embroidered with wool which now shows multiple signs of damage," Antoine Verney, the chief curator of the museum, told AFP.

Thanks nickcarraway. Here's a story that will leave us all in stitches. /rimshot
That’s pretty great. I wonder if someone has made something like that for Trajan’s Column?
oooh, there is... https://www.nationalgeographic.com/trajan-column/
This is one of the most amazing objects I have ever looked at. Wherever it ends up it is well worth a visit. It’s incredible it was ever made in the first place and that it has made it to modern times is doubly incredible.
Nice tapestry. I’m glad I’m on this thread. /morerimshot.
It even has Halley's comet before it became known as Halley's comet.
I was lucky enough to go the Cloisters in NYC while the tapestry was on display there. We had an amazing history teacher that made sure we got to go see it.
Oh, darn!.................
Ah the tapestry...1066s version of “film at eleven”.
*PING* to the Monthly Fiber Arts Ping List!
It has a yarn to tell.....................
AMAZING! Thanks for sharing.
That is such a luscious piece of history! I’m very happy to know they’re going to do something to preserve it.

Thank you for posting this news. I was in Normandie in 1998 and saw the Bayeux Tapestry along with the Unicorn tapestries in Paris and later on, the Unicorn tapestries at the Met in NYC. Lots of food for thought in such works.
Looks like they did a great job, too.
Fun fact — The one in France is the original, unedited version. The one in Britain is a copy with the X-rated stuff covered up (you can do an Internet search to see what has been excised in the British copy).
Saw it on a Christmas visit to see my daughter. Her sister in law wanted to go. As a hand embroider , it was amazing. The colors were dimmed by age, the stitches were endless. I will have to do some more research.
