Explanation: After arriving at Jezero Crater on Mars, Perseverance went for a spin on March 4. This sharp image from the car-sized rover's Navcam shows tracks left by its six wheels in the martian soil. In preparation for operations on the surface of the Red Planet, its first drive lasted about 33 minutes. On a short and successful test drive Perseverance moved forward 4 meters, made a 150 degree turn in place, backed up for 2.5 meters, and now occupies a different parking space at its newly christened Octavia E. Butler Landing location. Though the total travel distance of the rover's first outing was about 6.5 meters (21 feet), regular commutes of 200 meters or more can be expected in the future.

I know that every time I get a new car, I spend weeks just moving it back and forth a few meters each day to test it out.
Are the Martians whining about emissions yet? Maybe everything on the vehicle is foreign to Mars. Ya think? Spot any old Schlitz cans yet?
Just checking out the systems, and turning around
to get a view of the blast area from the landing.
The rover weighs about 800 lbs on Mars (about a ton on earth).
The tire tracks do not seem to be very deep.
This is an animated visualization of the latest movement.

Looks like my cat’s tracks when he uses his litter box.
Forward, back forward, do a circle, back, etc..
Litter all over the place!!!
I love it, I need it, I seed it
Eight cylinders all mine
Alright hold tight, I'm a highway star
bttt
LOL! I’m stealing that.
Tire tracks all across your back,
I can see you’ve had your fun.

Be my guest. No credit to me though -- I stole it earlier today from PowerLineBlog.
Howard Wolowitz is just getting his driving techniques honed so he can get a date. :)
From a NASA article:
“Octavia Butler was the first African American woman to win both the Hugo and Nebula awards that honor great science fiction, and the first science fiction writer overall who received a MacArthur Fellowship. Her notable work includes the stories “Kindred,” “Bloodchild,” “Speech Sounds,” “Parable of the Sower,” “Parable of the Talents,” and the “Patternist” series. She died in 2006.”
I’m guessing that Issac Asimov Landing Site was already taken.
Issac Asimov is probably on a list to be “dissappeared” in the near future. Antifa would want to go to Mars to tear down his statue and the flag that the astronauts left.
They are rasonably well written, but the point of view is extreme anti-western civilization.
One was terrible. I purchased it at a garage sale because it was "science fiction".
It was all terrible fiction, and no science.
Butler hated it herself, and refused to allow any reprints, so it was only printed once in paperback.
It was so bad, I tossed it - It may be the only book I have ever discarded!
Two years later...
I found it was so rare, Butler fans were paying $200 a copy. I see the price has dropped to $150.
Some copies of Butler's work Survivor, are bringing over $1,100!
More plebian copies bring $500!
It was one of the worst so called "Science Fiction" books I have ever read.
Examples:
Aliens that easily mate and reproduce with humans.
Aliens that are human shaped, but change their skin color so well, you can be in a small room with them, and never notice they are there!
Because of this, Human weapons are useless!
Meanwhile, primitive weapons are awesome!
I was wrong. There were a couple of short runs before she banned any more.
To give an example of the insanity with these books, a signed copy went into the remainder bin (they are sprayed with a special paint to identify them as "remainders".
It is in near-fine condition. It has her signature.
Remember, it was so well accepted, a signed copy went into the remainder bin in 1979.
Today, the owner is asking $5,000.
It’s drawing a picture of.....The Millenium Falcon!
Go Han, go!
