People Who Recovered From COVID-19 Should Receive Only 1 Dose of the mRNA Vaccine: Study

Amid reports of vaccine shortages occurring around the world, a new study (pdf) suggests that people who have already had COVID-19 should get only one shot of the mRNA vaccine to avoid possible unnecessary adverse reactions and free up supplies for those who need it more.
The study, which hasn’t been peer-reviewed, evaluated vaccine reactions after receiving the first dose in 231 individuals—83 with a past infection of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus and 148 who had never had an infection.
Researchers found that both groups equally reported experiencing pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site at the time of vaccination, which improved in a couple of days. However, people with a prior infection experienced more severe systemic reactions—fever, headache, chills, muscle or joint pain, and fatigue—than those who had never been infected.
“We also noted that vaccine reactogenicity [expected reactions] after the first dose is substantially more pronounced in individuals with pre-existing immunity akin to side-effects reported for the second dose in the phase III vaccine trials [of both Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna],” the researchers stated.
A severe systemic reaction to a vaccine “prevents daily activity,” according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Overall, there was a higher report of local and systemic adverse reactions in the vaccine group compared to placebo group in both the Moderna (pdf) and the Pfizer-BioNTech (pdf) phase 3 studies that continue to collect data on vaccine safety and efficacy.
The study also looked at immune system’s response to the vaccines in 109 people: 41 who had recovered from COVID-19 and 68 who’ve never had the disease, and found those in the recovered group had “10-20 times higher” antibody levels than those who had never been infected.
More studies are needed to further investigate the study’s findings due to the small number of participants.

If they recovered, why would they want any vaccine at all?

My doctor asked if I was going to take the vaccine. I said that I’m immune because I had recovered from the virus. She said yes, but they don’t know how long that will last. I told her that they don’t know how long the vaccine will last either. She begrudgingly admitted I was right.

Maybe it’s a dumb question but Does it work this way? If your natural antibodies from recovery lasts 1 year and the vaccine lasts 2 years, will your immunity be 1 + 2 years?

I’ve had covid the best immunity any person could ask for.

The question is and has always been this — How long does this immunity after infection last?
If a person were vaccinated how long do we expect THAT immunity to last?
To: BenLurkin
Because there is no significant data if a previous infection promotes long term immunity. The vaccine can act as a booster shot.

Because if you don’t have the receipt of the vaccine you get a gold star on your cloths to wear.

I had my first shot of Moderna vaccine yesterday. Swelling and pin at injection site was not bad and quite bearable. Today after 24 hours, 75% of pain is gone.
But I heard the 2nd shot a month later has more impact.

My husband and I had our first vaccine shot today at a local hospital While we were standing in line we began conversation with another couple who had COVID in November, one hospitalized and one stayed home, their doctor said they should have the vaccine. So they went in for their shots and were there a short time and left without the vaccine. They were told that they could not get the vaccine until ninety days after having had COVID. THe staff at the hospital also told them that when they came back for the vaccine to take an OTC Benadryl before. So it sounds to me that the period of immunity must be 90 days.

My immunity, and my husbands also, lasted almost exactly 10 months. We are just recovering from our second round of covid. Here’s hoping that gets us better immunity!!!
I had read somewhere that if you have it twice, the immunity is almost complete - but who knows - yet.
Clearly the experts don’t.

Its not additive, the mRNA platform demonstrated T-cell immunity immunity (Memory immunity) at about 8 weeks. I believe that as the antibodies diminished in infected people, T-cell immunity was also found.
In the studies, the second shot of the series was what drove t-cell stimulation. Hence the reason for the second shot
J&J the single shot platform with dead viral particles stimulates antibodies, but the question is does it stimulate memory. Probably not, ergo the single shot looks more like a yearly vaccine.

Still looking for answers on this.
If someone tested positive in mid-December for covid...had a few rough days...recovered.
Had antibodies tested last week and have antibodies galore as of Feb 1..WHY GET VACCINE right now?
“wait 90 days” because immunity might not last (per CDC and PCP). Then what? Why not get antibodies tested again vs getting vaccine?

It is possible to get it again....they don’t know for sure.
“In general, reinfection means a person was infected (got sick) once, recovered, and then later became infected again. Based on what we know from similar viruses, some reinfections are expected.”
