Curt Schilling defends legacy, knocks 'cowards' after missing baseball Hall of Fame

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling said he was “at peace” after failing to receive the required votes to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Schilling received 285 of the 401 votes, 71 percent, just 4 points shy of the 75 percent needed for inductions, the Boston Globe reports. However, none of the candidates received enough votes to be inducted.

On Facebook, Schilling, shared a lengthy statement that he said had also been sent to the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Schilling requested to be removed from the ballot, adding, "I don’t think I’m a hall of famer as I’ve often stated but if former players think I am then I’ll accept that with honor.

“As I’ve stated often over the past years to those I’ve spoken with in my heart I am at peace. Nothing, zero, none of the claims being made by any of the writers hold merit," said Schilling. "In my 22 years playing professional baseball in the most culturally diverse locker rooms in sports I’ve never said or acted in any capacity other than being a good teammate."

The retired baseball player is likely referring to criticisms of his behavior on social media where he has attacked groups such as Muslims and transgender people. Schilling once tweeted a photo comparing Muslims to Nazis. His anti-trans comments online led to him being fired as an analyst from ESPN.

The Communists are trying to make Schilling a non-person.

The Baseball HOF is a sham.Baseball writers, the majority of whom are lefties cast the deciding vote. Many great ballplayers, who excelled on the field, are ignored because of their lifestyle, or pure favoritism such as ignoring the media.

I don't think he's a Hall of Famer, either. I'm glad to see someone demonstrate this kind of humility, for sure.

Having said that, I would also point out that the induction of Harold Baines into the Baseball Hall of Fame a few years ago basically means you could credibly induct about half the men who ever played the game into the HOF.

It’s the same sham as the Oscar’s and many other awards. Just why do media get to pick these things. It would be much more meaningful as Curt says coming from other players.

I was a huge Red Sox fan growing up, but when the Commie owners dumped on Curt and other assorted leftist stuff. I’ve walked away. Curt is a stand up guy. As a former Red Sox fan he gave some of my greatest sports memories; “The Bloody Sock game” and the 2004 World Series. I have one Sox jersey and it has his name and number on it. I proudly wear it.

“Take your HOF and shove it up you ASS. How serious can it be if Pete Rose is not in it. Hard to imagine a profession as worthless as baseball writers. The places I pitched and the fans there know that all I ever did and gave was my BEST. That is enough for me.”

THAT should have been his statement.

My Father was a sports writer, one of his books is actually in the Hall of Fame. He was a conservative Republican in a sea of lefties. He was successful despite the fact he refused to shmooze with them. He did not suffer fools lightly. They knew he was a a Republican and only judged him by the quality of his work. He is considered one of the greatest sportswriters ever. He came up at the same time as Pete Hammill, Jimmy Breslin and Roger Kahn. All huge liberals.

I don’t know if would have the same success today.

And the same with the Academy Awards and the Rock and Roll hall of fame and the Nobel Peace Prize. I’m pretty sick of the hypocrisy of these groups.

Accomplishment should applauded for what it is.

I have no idea why journalists decide who goes into a baseball hall of fame. I would probably make it statistics based + the vote of former players.

So more than half of all the players out there have more than 384 homers, 1600 RBIs, 1300 runs, 2800 hits, a 22 year career batting avg of .289 and were the 1st pick in the draft? Hmmm I guess baseball is more watered down then I thought...

How many 7th games did he win? More than half the HOF pitchers.

Well, I love the guy.

MANY years ago (Early 90’s??), my wife and I took my two sons to Florida to visit Disneyworld. While we were there, we took a side trip to Kissimmee to watch the Astros play a minor league game.

My oldest son was around 6 or 7 at the time. He LOVED baseball (and all sports) but was extremely small for his age. SOMEHOW, as we were walking around the complex, he ‘disappeared’. We just couldn’t see him anywhere. My wife was in full-fledged panic. She was screaming his name out...

In as short time, we heard a call... “Are you looking for this guy?” My son was sitting on Curt Schilling’s shoulder, with a big grin on his face”. Apparently, my son saw the players in a weight room and wandered in an open door to get a better look. About a half dozen or so signed his hat and turned him back over to us.

That was well before Schilling was famous. But, I’ve never forgotten it. We still have the hat. Not too many other really famous guys.. Darryl Kile,Andujar Cedeno, Jimmy Jones, and a couple of others I can’t make out.

I like the guy. :-)

Well, if we want to get into the Pete Rose debate, we all know why Pete was banned from baseball. Pete will be in the Hall of Fame at the point where he is no longer banned.

It will never happen, but someone could start their own Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, under a different name. And such an institution could honor who the operators of such organization choose to, based on whatever criteria they want to use.

22 seasons, and he only played in 130 or more games in 11 of them. Like Tim Raines (who was a more qualified candidate but still not a legitimate Hall of Famer), he spent much of his career as a part-time player and was rarely ever even considered a great player even in any given season.

The guy barely broke the 6% mark (once) in his regular Hall of Fame voting for the five years he was eligible, and then the Veteran's Committee decided eight years later that he was a Hall of Famer?

The Veteran's Committee was originally established to vet Hall of Fame candidates who played in an era long ago when statistical comparisons weren't necessarily a good measure of a player from a historical perspective.

The idea that some guy who was a 6% HOF candidate (at best) from 2007 to 2011 suddenly becomes a Hall of Famer in 2019 is ludicrous.
