Mealworms may soon find their into Europe’s pasta bowls and dinner dishes, after becoming the first insect approved in the region as a human food.

Wednesday’s (Jan 13) decision by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) paves the way for the yellow grubs to be used whole and dried in curries and other recipes and as a flour to make biscuits, pasta and bread.

Despite their name, mealworms are beetle larvae rather than worms and are already used in Europe as a pet food ingredient.

Rich in protein, fat and fibre, they are likely to be the first of many insects to feature on European’s plates in the coming years, EFSA chemist and food scientist Ermolaos Ververis told Reuters.

becoming the first insect approved in the region as a human food.

So in the EU, the government gets to decide what is human food, even if it has been eaten by humans for tens of thousands of years or more?

BFD, I have had mealworms by the Kg in my travels. Go to south east Asia they eat bugs that would make a westernized woman scream if it crawled across the floor. Giant water bugs grilled satay style comes to mind.Mexico eats these bugs too what do people think is in the mescal bottles. They have a candy that is rock sugar with these worms in the center you can find them in gas stations all over south Texas near the border towns.

Someone left a few at the fishing hole last year. Threw ‘em in a box with some oatmeal...got tons of ‘em.

I don’t think I have worked so hard to get to the top of the food chain only to eat mealworms.

Feed requirements for meal worms:

The feed conversion ratio (FCR), i.e. the quantity of feed ingested per kg of larvae harvested, on a fresh matter basis, was 1.98 for the period considered.

While getting used to cooking insects may take some psychological and cooking technique adjustment, the feed to edible weight ratio compares favorably to meats typically sold at the grocery store:

A key question is the amount of labor involved. It would not be surprising if meal worms were so labor intensive as to make the price to market uncompetitive with traditional meats.

Technically you are correct the proper mescal worms are Comadia redtenbacheri moth larvae that naturally grow in Tequila Agave Webber leaves but due to the expensive of cultivation of those.worms nearly every cheap bottle of mescal uses easily tray raised meal worms in their place. I have been to Mexico and seen the trays of wigglers being raised on corn meal. I was doing silver exploration work on contract as a geologist man we got hammered on that gut rot after coming out of the field two-week on two off.

I saw worm production for mescal use in Mexico when we “toured” a mescal factory read bribed the staff to take us around. They were growing thousands of them in trays with cornmeal bedding stacked six trays high industrial style not much to it put eggs in cornmeal let.hatch , they feast on said meal and get fat and you use a wire scooper to strain them out of the meal. Even illiterate peasants could do it as everyone of the half dozen workers was. The feed to protein ratio is whats important since this is animal protein it automatically has all 9 essential amino acids needed for monogastric animals of which humans, chickens, hogs, cats and dogs all are. Theoretically with this as a protein source , amd a source of carbohydrates one could make a complete ration for a monogastric animal adding in mineral powder and salt licks or powder. Feed it to chickens, hogs, fish and other fowl then eat those animals no need to feed it to humans unless they really want the lean protein. Powder formed this would be great in protein bars or breads once powdered it likely would have zero.flavor anyways

They’re moving hordes of people from very foreign cultures from their equatorial homes to the north before making people in northern countries eat their food: bugs. Elitist philanthropy: it’s what’s for chaos, conflict, death and TEOTWAWKI. All for their efforts to establish slavery again.

"A key question is the amount of labor involved. It would not be surprising if meal worms were so labor intensive as to make the price to market uncompetitive with traditional meats."

Back in the 70's, a rumor took hold in the popular conscience that McDonald's was augmenting their beef with ground earthworms. McDonald's PR team aggressively called a press conference where they very visually demonstrated that bringing a pound of earthworms to the table would cost considerably more than bringing a pound of beef to the table.
