Philadelphia will lift its ban on indoor dining, theaters and in-person college instruction on Jan. 16 as Covid-19 cases continue to drop in the city.
Restaurants will be allowed to have indoor dining at 25% of seating capacity. Colleges and universities will be allowed to resume in-person instruction, as well.
City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley had said he would wait until after the holidays to evaluate the easing of restrictions. The city reported 637 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the citywide total of 98,215 since March.
Theaters will also be allowed to reopen, with a cap of 5% of total capacity or five people per 1,000 square feet, including both attendees and staff. Food and drink will not be allowed, and all guests must wear masks.
Indoor gatherings, indoor catered events, indoor recreational sports and senior day services will continue to be restricted.

No surprise here. Will be out of quarantine 1/17.
How is a restaurant supposed to break even with 25% max. capacity?
This is just theatrics, they don’t want them open.
Unexpected ...
Not exactly. Sounds like they’re just going back to what they had in place in early November. Opening a restaurant to 25% or capacity or a theater to 5% of capacity hardly seems worth the effort of running the business.
All that will be left will be corporate restaurants. A lot of popular and profitable restaurants have closed. Most will never reopen.
Sniffy Joe is a miracle worker. He can cure COVID-19 and he can create votes with just a sleight of hand.
What a coinkydinck.
Hopefully no one will attend the theaters. Starve Hollywood.
All the shutdowns and quarantines do is delay the inevitable and destroy the economy....
The questions for these foolish Liberal Governors is when the spike in cases happens again and it’s sure to happen, will they lock down again....
In the UK they are in their 3rd major lock down....I suspect Philadelphia and New York, will shut down again....
Philadelphia will lift its ban on indoor dining, theaters and in-person college instruction on Jan. 16 as Joe Biden prepares to take the Presidency.
Fixed it for you...
Its amazing how democrats deliver on these miracles.
The election of bill clinton made the homeless problem disappear. The election of obama made the problem of war and troop deaths disappear. Now the election (?) of biden makes covid disappear.
I can’t help but to think that in about 6 months, the opportunities for people wanting to open restaurants will be huge. There will be huge pent up demand and way fewer players in the market.
Likewise, I imagine a lot of entrepreneurial types will be reluctant to try opening a new business (especially one as low-margin as the restaurant world), since they have seen that they can be closed down and economically bled to death, without recourse, under the guise of “an emergency”.
And at the same time, as happened long after the Depression, how many former customers will now regard eating out an extravagance they can’t afford?
“Theaters will also be allowed to reopen, with a cap of 5% of total capacity or five people per 1,000 square feet, including both attendees and staff.”
Is that anywhere near break-even ?
No food and drink in the theaters. That is where the profit for a theater is even without attendance restrictions. Apparently Dr. Farley did not talk to the theater owners before issuing this insane edict.

After Joe Biden institutes the $15 minimum wage, nobody will be able to eat out.
Told my wife back in July 2020 that covid will be over just as soon as Biden takes office.
