Try going past a fake news outlet for your information. Go read the NRA’s March, 1968, article where they tout being gun control advocates since before 1934.
As further evidence, the NRA’s president testified before the congress for the 1934 National Firearms Act. He said such crap as “I have never believed in the general practice of carrying weapons. I seldom carry one. ... I do not believe in the general promiscuous toting of guns. I think it should be sharply restricted and only under licenses”.
I read back then that no POLITICAL arm existed till 1977. This was during the Revolt at Cincinnati. I was an NRA member way back then and remember reading of the revolt in several gun magazines and newspapers

The NRA created the ILA because of the blowback by NRA members for the 1968 Gun Control Act (GCA) that was dead but the NRA gave new life to and got passed.
The NRA has ALWAYS been political. How the hell do you think they had any effect??
