Trying to go to the store less during the coronavirus pandemic? 24/7 Tempo has assembled a list of foods that won't spoil quickly, making them good choices to stock should you want to quarantine.
1. Apples • Shelf life: 2 weeks to 6 months The apples we eat in spring and summer were often harvested in cooler weather. That's because they're a fruit that can stay fresh and crisp for as long as six months if they're stored in a cold, dark place (such as a root cellar in winter). If they're kept in a fruit bowl at room temperature, they'll generally remain at their best for at least two weeks, sometimes as long as a month.

Heck yeah! Feeds the soul in dark times...not to mention making it easier to swallow the endless beans and rice. As well as a way of presrving fresh fruit.
Aside from that 100 proof or higher cheap vodka is usable for disinfection. Isopropyl alcohol was in short supply not so long ago, at least in these parts. And that means it has serious barter value....get a few gallon jugs of last weeks vintage Old Kossack...or the 750ml bottles if cocktails named after Molotov seem necessary.
Nice post - thanks.

Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam… Lovely Spam! Wonderful Spam!
I believe that Archeologists found honey in the pyramids (or Egyptian tombs) and it was still fit to eat.
In my family, that forms a standing joke about aging food. “Is this celery still good to eat?” “Of course! They found celery in the pyramids, and it was still good!”
Sardines w/ chiles without a doubt! Love ‘em on saltines.
I have some foods in my pantry that are older (Mid 1990s) than Free Republic.
I probably should toss them.
Still, in 1976 in Basic Training, we ate WWII and Korean War C and K rations.
Twinkies have eternal life.
I have some honey in jars I got as a gift about 25 years ago. Once in a great while I get the urge to have honey on biscuits or toast and indulge. As the article states, it has gotten a bit darker over time, but it’s still good.
There have been stories that honey stored in Egyptian tombs is still good after 2000 years.
Honey is the world’s oldest preservative.
Funny, but I live near a nuclear-war target. I’ve imagined having to carry weeks’ worth of food on me. And while country ham is my first choice for protein, I’ve often considered the likelihood that I’d have the chance to further stock up at a mini-market. Slim Jims actually have a better nutrition profile than peanut butter.
You’re dissing part of a redneck 7 course gourmet (pronounced gore-met) meal: a Slim Jim and a six pack.
“20. Winter squash • Shelf life: 1 to 3 months Colorful winter squash – varieties like butternut, spaghetti, acorn, kabocha, and hubbard, among others – are one of the most durable of fresh vegetables, especially when stored in a cool, dark place.”
Squash will last forever at my house since we consider it to be inedible at any time. Same thing for cauliflower (and liver).
Beer is liquid bread.
Venison sausage and jerky. Shelf life around here is about 15 minutes.
🤣
Not in my house.
...Spam. 2 to 5 years. But so what?
As long as seals stay intact, it can be stored indefinitely, there will be a wee bit of deterioration of taste and texture after 5 years, but hey, who cares
It was like just off the top of my head; I know they’re good for a pretty long time.
Considered a food because the body can metabolize it.
Beer! There’s a sandwich in every can! ;)
