Was his joke the reason Trump ran for president? Some say so, and it torments him

When the definitive history of Donald Trump’s presidency is written, it’ll likely begin on April 30, 2011, long before he was actually elected.

That’s when Seth Meyers, then the anchor of “Weekend Update” on “Saturday Night Live,” told a joke that, some believe, so infuriated Trump he resolved to run for president.

Speaking at the White House Correspondents' Dinner that night, Meyers acknowledged Trump in the audience, and then said: “Donald Trump has been saying he will run for president as a Republican, which is surprising, since I just assumed he was running as a joke.”

It got a big laugh, but not from Trump, who who sat rigid and stone-faced in the audience, staring daggers at Meyers.
(snip)
Meyers didn’t write that joke. Comedian Jon Rineman did — and he regrets it. Talking publicly for the first time about the one-liner regarded by some as a pivotal moment in American political history, Rineman thinks he and the country would be better off today if he never scribbled that joke in his notebook. He’s not kidding. Rineman is tormented by the idea that he could be one of the reasons Trump became president.

Was the run for president in 2016 Trump’s revenge? Some think so.

“On that night, Trump’s own sense of public humiliation became so overwhelming that he decided, perhaps at first unconsciously, that he would, somehow, get his own back — perhaps even pursue the presidency after all, no matter how nihilistically or absurdly, and redeem himself,” The New Yorker’s Adam Gopnik, who was seated a few tables from Trump at the dinner, wrote in 2015.

Lesson: Don’t poke the bear.

That the joke writer is in therapy because of it is the real joke.

Trump should give a Presidential Medal of Freedom to Jon Rineman. That should seal the humiliation pretty thoroughly.

Way too good for Rineman.

After winning a second term, he should tweet a thanks to Rineman for his motivational speaking skills...

It would be plenty close enough to make a message without actually doing anything for the jerk.

Took a circle line cruise narrated by a guy who had written a book called Unique New York. According to him, the US Navy told the NY authorities that, if they built that bridge, they would close the Brooklyn Naval Yard. The risk was an enemy could drop the bridge and close the Narrows, trapping the ships. NY built it and the Yard was closed.

Sounds like ratings are slipping, what a shame.
Since it's Seth's fault, Antifa and BLM should hunt him down.

Partisan Media Shills update.

I remember that. There were some Democrats talking about drafting Donald Trump for the 1988 nomination. Back then, Trump was pro-abortion but was sound fiscally.

Today, Trump's governing philosophy is similar to what moderate-conservative Democrats from the 1960's and 1970's. I wish he'd do more to end the deficit and work to bring down the national debt. However, considering the alternative....I prefer someone agree with 95% of the time, to someone whose followers want me in a re-education camp, or in a lime-filled ditch with a bullet in my head.

There’s an old saying “He who laughs last laughs loudest.”

I’ll add ... “and even LOUDER when he’s President.”

And one more: 63+ MILLION of us are laughing AT Rineman and Meyers right now.

Trump talked about running earlier. Both Meyers and Obama are dreaming.

I have said, since Trump won, that the true measure of his intelligence is not just that he ran and won but WHEN he chose to toss his hat into the ring.

Oh for God 'effin' sakes, no sane competent sentient individual runs for President unless he actually wants to be President.

And note: Joe is not a sentient being.

I thought it all started when somebody said, “But Donald, you can’t get elected president,” and Trump replied, “Hold my Diet Coke and watch this!”

I always thought Trump probably ran for President because he was incensed that he had to pay off and suck up to politicians in order to be a successful businessman in New York.

Re: Ford

Ford was the patsy. The east coast Republicans (aka the cabal) installed Nelson Rockefeller as the vice-president after Nixon resigned.

On Sep. 5, 1975 Squeaky Fromme attempted to assassinate Ford with a 1911 semi-auto. She failed because there wasn't a round in the chamber. Seventeen days later, Sarah Jane Moore attempted to assassinate Ford with a revolver. If either had been successful, Rockefeller would have become president with less than half a term left, and would have been eligible for two full terms.

He would not have completed even the first term, as he died after a heart attack at a townhouse with a 25 year old woman there. She got scared when he died, and waited an hour to call anyone.
