Couple at NYC eatery served $2,000 Bordeaux in error after ordering cheap wine

A young couple who once dined at the Big Apple’s iconic Balthazar couldn’t bottle up their emotions after ordering an $18 Pinot Noir — but being served a $2,000 Mouton Rothschild instead by accident, the eatery’s owner recounted this week.

...the restaurant’s night manager said the host of the business meeting actually praised the purity of the cheapest wine on the list, while the lucky couple “jokingly pretended to be drinking an expensive wine,”

“The young couple were ecstatic by the restaurant’s mistake, and told me it was like the bank making an error in their favor,” said the red-faced owner, who admitted the embarrassing mix-up.

“The trouble was, it was me who was down $2,000, not the bank,”

“First, I cannot be. Second, I do not deign to be. Mouton I am.” When excluded from the top tier of Bordeaux in 1855, the estate began putting this note in French on the bottles. It was awarded first tier in 1973 after much needling.

The 89 which this is, did not cost anything near 2K on release. Probably in the area of $200 or so. I have some 82 Mouton which I paid $45 retain in 85 FWIW. The $2K is the restaurant menu price. Fair retail price today is about $800 for 89.

I once ordered the cheapest wine at a Ruth’s Chris. By mistake or intentionally (?), they brought out a much more expensive one. I didn’t look at the label until the bill arrived, so I was stuck with it.

I have found it is wise to attend wine tastings at a local shop. Over the course of several years I have had the opportunity to taste some really good inexpensive wines and some outstanding higher priced vintages.

The bottle shape should have tipped off the server that the wine was a Burgundy and not a Bordeaux. So I question how much of an accident this was.

A three liter box for $14 = 3 weeks of happy wife. Always a good deal!

I live near the Finger Lakes in NY. Great white wines. Good sweet reds. Horrible dry reds. We go on wine tours once or twice a year. You get to taste pretty cheaply, have a nice ride and a good dinner on the way home.

“Stick the expensive label on a bottle of cheap wine and pawn it off on the next sucker.”

When agents searched his house, they found inexpensive Napa wines with notes indicating they would be passed off as older vintages of Bordeaux, corks, stamps, labels, and other tools involved in counterfeiting wine.

For years hubs and I were members of the local Taster’s Guild run by liquor wine store owner who was very generous with his knowledge. I’ve had plenty of excellent wines in different price ranges. More people should take advantage of what is available.

” Sadly it did not last past 2000. “

Did you drink it all or did it go stale. I don’t know much about wine.
