“First, I cannot be. Second, I do not deign to be. Mouton I am.” When excluded from the top tier of Bordeaux in 1855, the estate began putting this note in French on the bottles. It was awarded first tier in 1973 after much needling.

The 89 which this is, did not cost anything near 2K on release. Probably in the area of $200 or so. I have some 82 Mouton which I paid $45 retain in 85 FWIW. The $2K is the restaurant menu price. Fair retail price today is about $800 for 89.

I got one at the time of release and it was around $130. The art label commemorates the fall of the Berlin Wall. I kept it until President Reagan’s funeral. I drank it while watching it on tv. It was very good. No regrets for drinking it then and not keeping it til now with it’s higher value. I still have the empty bottle in my kitchen.
