Mouthwashes may help lower the transmission and spread of the coronavirus, according to a new study.
In the study, published in the Journal of Medical Virology, researchers investigated over-the-counter mouthwashes and nasal rinses commonly found in drug stores and supermarkets, since both types of products directly impact the major sites of reception and transmission of human coronaviruses (HCoV) - namely, the mouth and nose - and may provide an additional level of protection against the virus.
To find out whether mouthwashes and nasal rinses would be effective against the coronavirus, the researchers tested a common human coronavirus known as 229e - one of several strains that typically only cause mild infections like the common cold, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - not SARS‐CoV‐2, which is the virus associated with COVID‐19.
But, as the lead author of the study, Craig Meyers, Ph.D., tells Yahoo Life, all coronaviruses have something in common: They have a membrane, says Meyers, a distinguished professor of microbiology and immunology at Penn State.
With membrane viruses, all you have to do is break that membrane and theyre inactivated, Meyers explains. Its very difficult to work with the actual COVID-19 virus. But the membranes [in coronaviruses in general] are pretty much the same.

I’ve heard that saline and/or antiseptic sinus rinses inactivate the virus too. And that the sinuses are probably more important than the mouth and throat.
Well, gin and vodka contain the active ingredient of mouthwash and tonic contains the active ingredient of hydroxychloroquine
Ping. Do I remember you having your people using Listerine as part of your anti-Covid protocol, from many months ago?
And limes contain sweet lime goodness.
Alcohol will kill anything. Even your liver.
My dad used the original Listerine product often, and especially when we had colds. I hated it, but I think it did a good job of killing mouth germs.
Yes I still do it every day.
Sad that it even occurred to you to have to post that!
Thanks for the OP.
Gin and vodka Help kill the virus? Not to be too cynical but maybe thats why the commie type D governors closed down the bars
I wonder if mouthwash is now going to disappear from stores. Hey, if we did it to toilet paper....
Yes it has been known for quite awhile that tonic ( quinine) helps fight the virus. At least in larger quinine amounts. There isnt a lot of quinine in the typical Bottle of tonic water so Id still consult my doc if I was concerned maybe Id caught the virus.
Neti Pots are a wonderful invention. Just boil your water first, especially if you have well water like I do.
I prefer the squeeze bottles.
but I also like the canned saline spray for convenience.
Mouthwash could ‘inactivate’ human coronaviruses that cause infections like the common cold - Listerine marketing team says. :)
Don’t forget the eyes. I recommend an eye wash made from fresh jalapeno juice.
If you feel a burning sensation, it means it’s working. :)
Gargle with salt water. It does the job.
Too clarify, I don’t think mouthwash, gargling, or sinus rinces will stop an infection once it’s started.
If the virus hasn’t yet found an ACE-2 receptor, then yes.
Once started, it might be able to slow down an infection and give your body more time to ramp up. But once a cell sends out a few thousand copies of the virus all bets are off on whether something as simple as this can make a meaningful impact.
Put a drop of oregano oil under your tongue. It will make you hate life. But I’m told it is a natural antibiotic. Sure tastes like death.
For what its worth, I have been making my own mouthwash of peroxide and a bit of peppermint oil and a little bit of oregano oil for years. After I brush my teeth I sprayed this concoction into my mouth as far back as I can and under my tongue. Swish around for as long as I can.
Then I take a Q-tip and put peroxide on it, then run this around the inside of my nostrils.
Ive also been making my own tonic water from cinchona bark, Take zinc vitamin C, quercetin, etc.
