The musician who wrote Reggae classic Electric Avenue sued President Trump for copyright infringement for using the song in a Twitter video that bashed Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
Songwriter Eddy Grant filed the suit in Manhattan federal court Tuesday, claiming he has suffered and will continue to suffer if the video continues to spread across the internet.

Has been looking for a payday................
Another idiot who doesn’t get how music licensing works.
Well, for that matter, like actors, musicians tend to be morons.
I believe that if TRUMP has paid the NASCAP or BMI dues he can use the song.
What was that great Eddie Grant song after ‘Electric Avenue’?
Yeah, that’s a trick question.
What a loser
Its a SONG..anyone can use it, sing it do whatever they want with it they dont have to ask permission
The funny thing is, you can’t find the original version of “Electric Avenue” on Spotify or other streaming services. Only crappy versions that he re-recorded. So I’m sure he owns the copyright to the song, but obviously he signed away some rights on the original recording and won’t get much money if he signs off on the hit version going up on the streaming services.
Eddy Grant argues his signature hit was used without permission in a campaign video. “This is copyright 101,” his lawyer tells Billboard.
Singer Eddy Grant filed a copyright lawsuit against Pres. Donald Trump’s campaign on Tuesday (Sept. 1) over a campaign video that his lawyers say illegally uses the singer’s iconic 1983 song “Electric Avenue.”
The suit is tied to a bizarre animated ad posted on Twitter by Trump’s campaign on Aug. 12 which depicts a cartoon version of Trump’s White House rival, former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden, driving an old-fashioned train car while a speeding train that says “Trump Pence” and “KAG 2020” zips through a desolate town.
There is no context for the use of the song, which plays as the animated Biden hand-pumps his way through the empty streets in a handcar labeled “Biden President: Your Hair Smells Terrific” while random snippets of old quotes and interviews are played.
Trump didn’t even create it. He just tweeted it again. The original user id is at the end of the video. They should go after the creater if they want. Copyright 101.
Where be my money?
Musically it's kind of a joke of a song. I think if I wrote a song that was childishly basic and nobody had listened to for 35 years I'd be happy about it.
Trump didn’t even make it! Some dude named somthing wicked made it and posted to his Twitter account on February 11!
When you sell your album to an organization such as ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC; that music is licenced to be played by others.
TV stations, radio, theaters, movies, various promotions can pay a royalty to ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC; and use the music from their catalog.
As long as Pres. Trump’s campaign paid royalties - you got your money (and have received royalty checks for years), so you were paid. The Trump campaign paid for the rights to use the catalog, and people heard your music - the correct thing to do is say “thank you”, and then stfu.
You may own the Copyright, so no one else can record your song without your permission - but ANYONE who pays the royalties, can use your songs as they see fit.
The fact that it hasn’t been pulled from Twitter leads me to believe that he has no case.
Eddie hasn’t had a paycheck in a long time.
